Standard Dimir Demilich – Deck Highlight

Standard Dimir Demilich by Ondrej Strasky and Stan Cifka

Ondrej Strasky mentioned that he and Stan Cifka were very close to submitting this Dimir Demilich deck for Worlds this weekend. This deck is really fun to play and it’s completely different from what we’re used to seeing in Standard now.

The idea is to dig into your deck with Consider, Otherworldly Gaze, Curate and Strategic Planning, looking for Demilich and the right cards for the matchup that you can play with it later. Demilich itself can be played from the graveyard, so all these mill cards are creating a lot of additional value.

Against aggro, you’ll appreciate the anti-creature package of Fading Hope, Bloodchief’s Thirst and Tempted by the Oriq, while against control you have four Duress and two Concerted Defense to disrupt them.

At first, I thought the two Swamps in the deck have to be extremely awkward when you are trying to cast a UUUU card, but keep in mind that any instant or sorcery makes Demilich cost one less U mana, which means that a Duress or Bloodchief’s Thirst can effectively filter your black source into blue mana.

The cherry on top are the two Alrund’s Epiphanies, at which point the game is usually over.

If you’re looking for something completely different that your opponent might not expect, I can definitely recommend giving this deck a try. It looks both fun and powerful and as an added bonus, your opponent will be extremely unlikely to know how to play against you, which is always a nice edge to have.
