Adventures in the Forgotten Realms is the 88th Magic expansion, released on July 23, 2021. This set is the first crossover set in Magic’s history, with its themes, cards and lore all based on Dungeons & Dragons. Forgotten Realms additionally replaces the Core Set slot for the 2021 year.
The set features many mechanics based off Dungeons & Dragons. Dice rolling, notably rolling d20s, is featured for the first time in a non-Un set, with cards having variable effects based on your roll. In the associated Commander set, other dice, such as d4s, d6s, d8s and d12s, are also featured.
Additionally, venture allows players to explore one of three Dungeons based off of three classic D&D modules – Lost Mine of Phandelver, Tomb of Annihilation or Dungeon of the Mad Mage. Players advance to a new room every time they “venture,” with each room containing an effect. Once a Dungeon is completed, players can then choose to run a different Dungeon or the same Dungeon again once they venture again.
Forgotten Realms, being a D&D-based set, features many popular characters from the Forgotten Realms plane. The legendary hero Drizzt, the Dragon-God Tiamat, the Wizard Mordenkainen and the crime lord Xanathar all have cards based off their likeness (and rulebooks).
Like most modern Magic sets, Forgotten Realms was released in Draft Boosters, Set Boosters and Collector’s Boosters. The showcase styling is based off of the classic rulebooks for D&D, with many of the game’s iconic creatures receiving a special version.
Four Commander decks were also released alongside the Forgotten Realms set, based off different mechanics present – Treasure, Dungeons, Equipment and Dragons.
