Top 5 Battle for Baldur’s Gate Combos, Part 2 – Riley Ranks

Last time, I shared some of the sweet combos you can get going with the new cards in Battle for Baldur’s Gate. There are heaps more to get across, however, so today we’re going to explore more ways to gain infinite life, draw infinite cards and add infinite mana – sometimes all at once! There’s even a way to take infinite turns, but – as you’ll see – it’s not a very simple combo. Let’s start with some easier ones!

Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher + Umbral Mantle

Vhal, Candlekeep ResearcherUmbral Mantle

How about we kick off with some infinite mana*? Infinite mana* combos tend to be extremely powerful, because you can often use that infinite mana* to enable drawing infinite cards, which usually leads to infinite damage. Vhal, as a card that can produce a potentially enormous amount of mana, perhaps even infinite*, is ripe for exploitation.

Attach an Umbral Mantle (or a Sword of the Paruns, for that matter) to Vhal, and you can tap and untap her, netting one mana each time – infinite mana*! With Umbral Mantle, Vhal can also become arbitrarily large, because all the +2/+2s will stack. If you can get Vhal to five toughness, you can throw Staff of Domination in there instead, still netting a mana each time (three to untap Vhal, one to untap the Staff, one remains in pool). Again: infinite mana*!

*Terms and conditions apply. Infinite mana can’t be spent to cast spells from your hand. So… yeah. Infinite mana, but not particularly useful infinite mana.

Abdel Adrian, Gorion’s Ward + Animate Dead

Abdel Adrian, Gorion's WardAnimate Dead

Abdel Adrian offers a weird interaction with an even weirder reanimation spell: Animate Dead. Because Animate Dead is a permanent, it can be blinked with Abdel Adrian’s ability, and this lets you create an infinite loop, where you blink both Abdel Adrian and the Animate Dead over and over again. The result? Infinite 1/1 tokens, not to mention infinite enter-the-battlefield and death triggers.

Here’s how you do it: cast Animate Dead with Abdel Adrian in the bin. When he enters the battlefield, exile the Animate Dead (and anything else you feel like blinking) with his ability. When the Animate Dead blinks out, Abdel Adrian is sacrificed, leaving him in the graveyard just in time to be targeted by the Animate Dead which has just blinked in because Abdel Adrian left the battlefield. Reanimate him again, blink out the Animate Dead again, and voila – you’ve demonstrated a loop.

Blur + Naru Meha, Master Wizard

BlurNaru Meha, Master Wizard

Here’s another pretty simple one: with Blur and Naru Meha, Master Wizard, you can draw your entire deck and get as many magecraft triggers as you like – not bad for a two-card combo, one half of which is your commander! You need at least one other creature on the battlefield, which you cast Blur on – but before it resolves, hold priority and cast Naru Meha, copying Blur. Target Naru Meha with the copy, which will draw a card and blink Naru Meha, enabling you to copy the original Blur. Rinse, repeat, infinite card draw.

You can use Dualcaster Mage instead of Naru Meha for a one-mana discount, assuming you’re playing red. Red also allows you to use Ral, Storm Conduit to deal a ton of damage to the table (not infinite, however, as you might deck out before everyone’s dead), and also gives you Storm-Kiln Artist to create a bunch of Treasure. Between drawing your deck and creating 60 or 70 Treasures, you probably should be able to win the game from there!

Teferi, Time Raveler + Displacer Kitten + Sol Ring/Mana Crypt

Teferi, Time RavelerDisplacer KittenSol RingMana Crypt

Displacer Kitten is a card just begging to be broken in half, and here’s a way that will get you infinite colorless mana and allow you to draw your deck. Again, from there, you should be able to win the game – if not, it might be time to go back to basics and fiddle around with your list a little bit, I reckon! Anyway for this combo you need Teferi and Displacer Kitten on the battlefield, and have Sol Ring in hand with the one mana you need to cast it.

Cast the Sol Ring, and blink Teferi with Displacer Kitten’s trigger. Teferi comes back into play and can be activated, but before you bounce the Sol Ring to hand, tap it for two mana. Bounce it, draw a card, and then replay the Sol Ring, netting one colorless mana. Trigger the Kitten, blink the Teferi, tap the Sol Ring, then bounce it – and do this until you’ve got enough mana and cards to win the game.

Owlbear Cub + Medomai, The Ageless + Hua Tuo, Honored Physician + Altar of Dementia

Owlbear CubMedomai the AgelessHua Tuo, Honored PhysicianAltar of Dementia

We’re going to finish up on a weird and convoluted combo that offers an extremely succulent payoff: infinite turns. If you’re sick of all your opponents constantly taking turns of their own, if you want to be the only player at the table to have main phases, then this combo might just pique your interest. Strap yourselves in.

To begin, you need Owlbear Cub and Hua Tuo, Honored Physician, and you need them to be free of summoning sickness. You also need a free sacrifice outlet on the battlefield. It can be Altar of Dementia, or Phyrexian Altar, or Ashnod’s Altar – you could also use something like Viscera Seer, but that does add another color to our already-three-color combo. Additionally, you need Medomai, the Ageless in your graveyard, and finally you need an opponent with eight lands who can’t block effectively.

Got all that? Easy, right? Now activate Hua Tuo, and put Medomai on top of your library. Attack with the Owlbear Cub, whose trigger will let you put a creature from your top eight cards into play tapped and attacking. What’s that, on top of your library? Medomai, the Ageless? How lucky! Put Medomai into play tapped and attacking, and connect for an extra turn.

But wait – Medomai can’t attack during extra turns, so how do we go infinite? By sacrificing Medomai with the Altar, then going to your extra turn – use Hua Tuo to put Medomai back on top of your library, attack with the Owlbear, put Medomai into play tapped and attacking, meaning it never actually attacked during the extra turn. Combat damage trigger, extra turn, do it all again. Infinite turns! I’m sure your opponents will love you for it.
