Deck of the Day: Modern Enduring Ideal

Enduring Ideal is unlike any other card in MTG. It’s one of five spells with Epic from the Saviors of Kamigawa expansion, and is one of the most iconic “build-around” cards of all time. While it might not end the game immediately, Enduring Ideal can be considered a one-card combo, as the first copy will usually find a powerful enchantment to get you out of whatever trouble you might be in while subsequent enchantments tighten the noose and lock the opponent out of the game.

The challenge of playing with Enduring Ideal in Modern isn’t a lack of enchantments, it’s a lack of ways to safely and effectively get to seven mana.

Modern Enduring Ideal Deck List - Rinko

Magic Online player Rinko has a creative solution to this problem. This particular take on Enduring Ideal can accelerate its mana via Lotus Bloom, or via Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, which is particularly potent with Leyline of Sanctity.

Here’s what one nice draw might look like against an opposing creature deck: Start with Leyline of Sanctity. Turn 1, Snow-Covered Plains and On Thin Ice the opponent’s Soul-Scar Mage. Turn 2 Wall of Omens. Turn 3 Nine Lives. Turn 4, Nykthos taps for six mana, facilitating Enduring Ideal, which might search for Greater Auramancy. From there, you bury the opponent brick by brick, until you’re sure they can never touch you, and then you win the game at your convenience with Form of the Dragon.

Even outside of mana acceleration and Enduring Ideal, this deck is full of defensive and disruptive permanents. In this way, it can play as either a combo deck, or a prison-style defensive deck depending on what your draw (and the matchup) lends itself to.

While I can imagine Enduring Ideal having a tough matchup against faster opposing combo decks, it should be a stone cold killer of anyone playing a “normal” gameplan and looking to attack with creatures. Since it features maindeck Leyline of Sanctity, it’s particularly well set-up against opponents slinging burn spells or Thoughtseizes.
