The Chilling Reign Starter Article — Bradner's Lists & Ideas

Yo! What’s up, everyone? It’s Isaiah back with my first article on Chilling Reign! I’m incredibly excited for a new set to shake up this metagame and boy is this a good one! This article will go over the best decks and cards from this new set and what stands out from the set to me. So, let’s get into it.

Right off the bat, you have the frontrunner of the set, Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX!

This card is insane! Two of the best cards printed in recent memory (Zoroark-GX and Malamar) came together to have a card baby and boy is it powerful. Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX allows you an insane amount of board advantage by letting you attach an extra Energy per turn for each Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX you have on board! On top of that, it draws you two cards, which boosts your deck’s consistency like crazy! As if this weren’t enough, the attack on Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX is extremely useful. In many matchups, your late game will revolve around using Underworld Door to get a ton of Psychic Energy in play and then finishing out with a few huge Max Geist for the game.

Shadow Rider Calyrex V is no slouch either. For one Energy, you can lock your opponent out of Special Energy and Stadium cards for a turn, which is enormous in a deck that wants to prevent your opponent from playing Path to the Peak. It also has a powerful second attack that places five damage counters on two Pokemon, which is the perfect way to finish off earlier missed KOs. All of this considered these cards are sure to be played and dominate the meta while they’re in standard. You can see two of the lists I made for Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX decks a bit later!

As if the Shadow Rider Calyrex line weren’t enough, this set also introduced a few more incredible tools to help Psychic-type Pokemon!

The first is Fog Crystal, which serves as an extra Quick Ball and an Energy Spinner in a single card! This card is insane, especially in Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX, which wants to flood the board with Shadow Rider Calyrex V early. This also helps you get Energy so you can continue to Underworld Door every turn! It’s the perfect card for Calyrex VMAX and one I’m happy to add to every list I make.

Additionally, Psychic types also gained Cresselia. This Pokemon is reminiscent of the Volcanion from Unbroken Bonds, a staple in Fire decks for over a year. Accelerating three Energy for free is just so good, especially in a deck that scales its damage based on the Energy you have in play, so I expect this card to be in almost every Shadow Rider Calyrex list.

With those cards introduced are my two Calyrex VMAX lists:
