The two main draws of Evolving Skies are dragons and Eeveelutions. I’m very excited about the return of the Dragon-type to the game, and especially what that means for the Expanded format, where each new Dragon Pokemon must be reevaluated in the light of access to Double Dragon Energy. Suddenly, cards like Dragonite V and Regidrago have some amazing potential… but that’s a topic for another time.
Today, we’re talking about Standard, and I think that Eeveelutions will have a higher impact on that format. Not that Rayquaza VMAX and Duraludon VMAX are bad, but Umbreon VMAX alone offers a new way to play Eternatus VMAX and a new Single Strike variant, not to mention its status as both a Shadow Rider counter and a Boss’s Orders-type effect makes it a desirable card in any deck that can fit it. A Mewtwo & Mew-GX / Welder deck featuring Umbreon VMAX got second place at Japanese Nationals! Last week, I also covered Leafeon VMAX and its strong potential.
However, the other Eeveelutions also have potential! In this article, I’ll be talking about the three “original” Eeveelutions: Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon. All three benefit from the excellent Elemental Badge; cost reduction effects have always been excellent (think Karate Belt, Dimension Valley, Energy Gain…), which means that these Eeveelutions have an innate advantage. I should say that I don’t think these cards are at the level of the top decks in the format (Shadow Rider and Rapid Strike Urshifu), so the most competitive players might skip them. However, all three are definitely tournament playable! So, if you’re looking for something different or maybe if you want to build a deck around your favorite Eeveelution (mine’s Vaporeon, what’s yours?), keep reading!
