Ride of the High King — Optimizing Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX

Hello again readers, I’m back with you today with a more focused article, talking about just one deck in-depth rather than lots of different deck ideas that I had. Ironically, today’s deck is one I specifically said I wasn’t going to bother with for a while, but I built what the packs gave me, and they gave me Ice Rider Calyrex. Not quite what I was hoping for, but after playing games with the deck, I like it a lot more than I thought I would. There are a few different ways to build this deck, but from what I’ve seen, Path to the Peak finds its way into every one of them, just because of how powerful it is against so many decks.

There’s been a lot of hate for Ice Rider, and while I sort of see where they’re coming from, I do think the deck is better than it has been given credit for. I would compare it to Eternatus, but with different typing. It hits hard for a relatively low cost, and that’s something that has almost never been completely terrible. It wasn’t until Path to the Peak stopping Zacian was pointed out to me that I even considered this deck, but once that hurdle was cleared to some extent, I knew I would at least have to try the deck before dismissing it. Yes, it will still struggle a bit with Zacian decks, but at least it has much more of a fighting chance, especially against ADP.
