Nico Bohny – known as shir khan on Magic Online – has won the Season 2 Magic Online Championship Showcase. The tournament took 8 highly accomplished players from the Magic Online Championship Series and pitted them against each other in Vintage Cube draft and Modern Constructed.
Bohny has an impressive resume outside of Magic Online, with two Pro Tour Top 8s, two Grand Prix Top 8s (including a win), and a Worlds Team Championship with Switzerland in 2007. Bohny qualified for the event through the Vintage qualifier, all while he was on a quest to play 30 different decks in 30 different events.
Bohny won the event on the back of his Modern deck chose – Orzhov Hammer. The deck leverages the powerful equipment of Colossus Hammer with various synergies and ways to equip it for free – like Puresteel Paladin and Sigarda’s Aid. The deck also runs a low enough curve that it can use Lurrus of the Dream-Den as a companion, giving it a powerful late game engine alongside its explosive early turns.
Bohny beat out a field full of so-called Magic Online end-bosses: Marcela Almeida (known as mahzinha_linda on Magic Online), Jack Potter (HouseofManaMTG), Nathan Steuer (nathansteuer), Logan Nettles (Jaberwocki), Derrick Davis (derk714), Alexander Ivanov (BeReborn), and Sam Rolph (Phill_Hellmuth).
The Season 2 Championship featured high-powered Magic. The Vintage Cube is known for being not only skill testing, but also full of incredibly strong cards. Modern has felt the full force of recent pushes in power, with multiple decks featuring Lurrus as well as other newer cards, like Omnath, Locus of Creation and Yorion, Sky Nomad.
Qualifiers for the Season 3 Magic Online Championship Showcase are underway on Magic Online. The next Championship will take place in 2022 and the last chance Open qualifiers – taking place January 8 and 9, 2022, will feature Innistrad: Crimson Vow Sealed. Those two tournaments also qualify players for the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Championship on Arena.
