A new champion and a new Standard format. This is your week in Magic news.
The week started with a bang. Austin Bursavich won the 2020 Season Grand Finals. The tournament, which capped the 2020 partial season, utilized both Standard and Historic constructed. Both formats saw a plethora of Omnath, Locus of Creation decks. Bursavich used Omnath Adventures to battle back from the Lower Bracket and claim the title of Grand Finals champion.
Speaking of Omanth, it got banned in Standard and suspended in Historic the very next day. The October 12th Banned and Restricted list update changed the texture of Standard. Omnath, along with Lucky Clover and Escape to the Wilds, were excised from Standard. Omnath was also removed from Brawl (but not Historic Brawl), and Burning-Tree Emissary was unsuspended in Historic.
The week closed with the October MTG Arena State of the Game. The first of two big takeaways from this announcement is that the next Arena Open is coming the last weekend of October, and Day One will feature a Best-of-Three option. The second: Kaladesh Remastered is coming in November. The set will take cards from both Kaladesh and Aether Revolt and package them into a release for Arena to help populate the Historic format.
