News Round Up: Week of June 19

Didn’t we just get off this ride? Barely a month after the conclusion of Modern Horizons 2 Spoiler Season the reveal for the next set has begun. Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms spoilers have begun in earnest. While we only have a few cards thus far, the next week is poised to be an avalanche of new cards as the first major Magic crossover set approaches its release. So far we have seen one new mechanic for the set: Dungeons. Dungeons are minigames that a player will always have access to – they are not like Companions where they take up a sideboard slot and need to be put into your hand. When cards “venture into the Dungeon” (a new keyword action), you can either start a dungeon or advance in a dungeon you have begun. You can only progress through one dungeon at a time and there are three possible dungeons in Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. We have also seen some cards that get a bonus if you have completed a dungeon.

Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms spoiler season runs through July 5. The prerelease will take place the weekend of July 16. The set goes on sale July 23.

Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms is not the only item coming to local game stores this season. The “Love Your Local Game Store” promotion continues. Starting July  23, local game stores will be able to offer the following cards in the Retro Frame:

Stores will also have an “Ampersand” promo of Tiamat – a five color legendary creature from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. Check with your local game store about how you can participate in the love.

That’s not the only surprise coming to brick and mortar shops. Mystery Booster: Convention Edition will be coming to select game stores in August. While this is not the exact set released at Magic Fests in 2019 and 2020, the idea is the same – a massive set complete with Playtest Cards. Check with your local shop about availability.

Finally this Saturday marks the finals of the first season of the 2021 Magic Online Championship Series. Eight players will battle over two days in both Modern Constructed and Modern Horizons 2 draft. The winner of each three round split will square off for a chance at the title. If one player wins both halves, they get the trophy.
