I’ve got a sweet exclusive preview card today, courtesy of Wizards of the Coast. It’s not Gnott bad, Gnott bad at all. I’m still not sure why I got a Troll-based preview card, but that mystery will go unresolved.
Take a look at Gnottvold Slumbermound, a powerful new land from Kaldheim.
I love utility lands and this is a great one. Let’s break down what this does and does Gnott do (okay, last time I promise).
One of the main reasons people (myself included) go nuts over lands with abilities is that including them is so cheap. You have to play lands to make your deck functional, so having your lands do things after you no longer need the mana is a huge advantage. Just take a look at Shatterskull Smashing and Kazandu Mammoth – there’s a reason they see a ton of play.
Gnottvold Slumbermound doesn’t ask much of you – it’s a land that taps for red and enters tapped, which is cost, but it isn’t incredibly detrimental. In return, you get a powerful ability and for many decks, that will be well worth it.
The payoff for playing the Slumbermound is quite high. Blowing up a land and making a 4/4 trampler is no joke. You might think that killing a land on turn seven (or later) isn’t that impactful, but it really adds up. In the kind of game where you have time to activate this, whittling your opponent’s mana base down is quite good.
Additionally, making a 4/4 at instant speed lets you threaten planeswalkers, ambush ground creatures and play around sweepers. The Troll you make is worth a card by itself, and your opponent will have to deal with it.
Just a few days ago, Huey wrote about a sweet-looking RG Land Destruction deck featuring Waking the Trolls, and Gnottvold Slumbermound fits in perfectly.
Here’s his deck list, updated to include Slumbermound.

I for one welcome our new Troll overlords, and am ready to announce that land destruction is back on the menu!
