Modern Rakdos by RespecttheCat
Just last week, I was talking with my cousin, Logan Nettles, about trying to fit Lightning Skelemental into Jund. It’s clearly a highly powerful card but I was skeptical of making it fit with the mana base and game plan of Jund.
Then, in researching for this week’s Modern Power Rankings, I came across this deck.
In essence, Rakdos is an alternative take on Jund which gives up on green in exchange for cleaning up the mana. The rewards for this come in the form of Lightning Skelemental, Kroxa, Titan of Death’s Hunger and Castle Locthwain in the main deck with Blood Moon in the sideboard.
As you can see, Rakdos also has a beautiful graveyard package that includes Magmatic Channeler and Unearth in addition to the Titan. It’s hard to match the mana efficiency of Unearth and there’s really nothing quite like getting a second shot at Lightning Skelemental or Seasoned Pyromancer.
While there’s no direct replacement for Wrenn and Six, cards like Tarmogoyf, Scavenging Ooze and Bloodbraid Elf don’t have quite the legendary status that they did in the past. They’re still good cards but the power level of alternative card choices has “caught up.”
If you cherish the midrange grind or if you’re just in the mood to bash people with a 6/1 haste, I recommend giving Modern Rakdos a try. It might be particularly appealing if you want to get a Jund-like experience while not having easy access to the pricey green cards like Wrenn and Six or Tarmogoyf.
