Legacy Jeskai Mentor by mw_94gA – 1st place Legacy Challenge 1/2/2021
Last Saturday’s Legacy Challenge was dominated by mw_94gA, who went a clean 9-0 with an original brew, which is a very rare occurrence in Legacy, especially these days.
Jeskai Mentor has always been a deck in Legacy, although mw_94gA innovated it by adding Dreadhorde Arcanist and Counterbalance, two very powerful two drops with one that sees plenty of play and the other which seemed widely forgotten since the ban of Sensei’s Divining Top.
The deck is a hybrid between a control deck, with Arcum’s Astrolabe and Counterbalance, and a Tempo deck, with Dreadhorde Arcanist and Daze. You have to understand when it’s time to deploy creatures or when it’s better to stay safe and defend instead.
Monastery Mentor is a great card in combination with nine counters that cost zero mana and the ability to go Monastery Mentor on turn three into countering your opponent’s next play is definitely something that plays very well in this deck’s favor.
There’s few spicy cards in the main deck that you rarely see in Legacy, the first one being Sevinne’s Reclamation, which is a great card in a deck with this many three drops, offering card advantage against the slower decks.
Pithing Needle instead is a concession to Oko, Thief of Crowns, since you have no ways to deal with it in the main deck aside from two copies of Lightning Bolt, whereas post-sideboard you’ll handle him with the four Pyroblast.
Brainstorm, Daze and Force of Will are the strongest cards in Legacy, and it’s nice to see a successful new shell for these overplayed cards.
