Sword of War and Peace from Action Set

170 thoughts on “Sword of War and Peace from Action Set”

  1. @JSL Isn’t Stoneforge Mystic already playable? And the centerpiece of the best deck available?

  2. I hope, HOPE this sword is not called Sword of Peace and War, or War and Peace for that matter. This card will be called Sword of Rage and Glory and I will be pleased.

  3. i am disappointed. one because i dont think we need swords for every color. AND because the sword is CLEARLY being held by a Phyrexian.

i’m honestly waiting for this thing to be something like….. “when equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, deal 3 damage divided as you choice among one, two, or three creatures and/or players. and put a +1/+1 counter on any number of creatures you control”

  4. Who ever said it was being held by a Phyrexian is wrong. I think that might just be armor, it’s a Mirran sword, you can see by the little logo in the bottom right corner.

  5. or we could make it more fun, and let it do something like….. Prevent the next 6 damage that would be dealt to target creatures and/or players of your choice. (effect stacks)

  6. I happen to be privy to some information about this card and I can tell you what this card does right you. it gives +2/+2, prot white and red and then does something good for you and something that is bad to your opponent when equipped creature deals damage to a player.

Also, has anyone noticed the odd interaction with mark of mutiny type spells and the swords? taking body and mind as an example, the way it is worded means that you get milled for 10, but you also get to make a wolf token. This is probably already known to everyone but I just found out today.

  7. Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from white and red.

When equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, Sword of Peace and War deals 3 damage to target creature or player, and you gain 3 life

  8. @justin, they have done gain life/deal damage already, I don’t think it’ll be as simple as that. It could be something like +1/+1 counters for you and -1/-1 counters for them.

  9. I was hoping for the Sword of Strife and Serenity.

My predictions about what it (((won’t))) gain: gain life, deal direct damage, untap something, return something.

And of course it’s being held by a Phyrexian, as it has pro-red and pro-white, just like the the Sword of Feast and Famine was held by a Mirran (pro-green and pro-black).

  10. manaburnsuicide

it should be phyrexian, seeing how it grants protection from primarily mirran colors.

  11. I think the white ability will be some sort of blink (glimmerpoint stag) type of thing. Red is just going to be damage quite obviously. Or some sort of hand discard and then re-draw thing.

  12. War and peace soo lame and obv name Faith and Fury was so sweet sounding! (but the abbreviations would be the same as feast and famine so ok)t. Best art of all of them! And the Peace part makes me very hopeful that the White power is to make opponent skip their attack step. The war part could let you have a second attack… idk that seems to good and one ability is always card advantage with other tempo. It is DEF NOT BURN! They said all the powers will be different and fire ice already does that. I think destroy non basic land or artifact. Battle cry or something wont work with how they work on conecting. A blink power would be interesting, but i dont think its that.

  13. Just because it give pro red and white does not mean it is held by a phyrexian (neither does the pick.personally i think its just the dudes armor). If you recall in Besieged, white is beginning to become corrupted, perhaps red has followed suit. The Mirrans must protect themselves from their corrupted comrades in order to win the war.

  14. I think the red side of the sword will probably be destroy target land. It won’t be burn and the only other thing I can think of for it would be artifact destruction, but that doesn’t feel too mythic when you take it out of limited. For the white side, I’m guessing untap all creatures you control for a vigilance type effect.

  15. @mike
look at the picture again it has we will endure and the mirran logo at the bottom right hand corner

  16. Destroy target land would be way too powerful. Untap all your creatures is too similar to SoFaF.

  17. it should be “Sword of Chaos and Order”
“Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, deal 3 damage to target creature or player, and target permanent does not untap during it’s controller’s next untap step”

  18. No way that this does direct damage to a creature OR player. SoFaI has already staked that claim. It could be, destroy target artifact, or some other red aligned theme, but NOT direct damage.

  19. who said that is cant have similar abilities to other swords Magic R&D have only made 4 swords. i can see them making direct damage since lightning bolt is not being reprinted in M12

  20. I’m hoping for plus one counters and artifact destruction. The recipe for these swords is that the colored effects are usually supposed to reflect effects that you could get for one mana at rare. Exiling creatures feels too swingy… and LD at one mana is purely unacceptable.

  21. all of the current swords have planeswalkerish abilities. SoB/M has a garruk ability of making a creature. it also has jace belerens ultimate of milling. SoF/F has garrukish untap land ability, and has Liliana’s discard. im thinking this will have ajani vengent’s ability of lightning helix.

  22. or it could have ajani vengent’s ulitimate of destroying lands, but it will be nurfed to only kill eather a land or a non-basic land. and it could also have gideon’s destroy a tapped/ or untapped creature defending player controls

  23. Just so you guys know, the abilities of the sword will NOT be life gain or dmg dealt to creature or player (light and shadow had life gain, fire and ice had the pinging)

It will be something like “You may destroy target non basic land and _insert white theme exile or tap here_

  24. Well look at the art, mby telling who will win? – looks to be a vulshok hand about to pwn dat zombie?

  25. so long as the abilities dont suck, this sword is kind of the answer to current caw-blade. i mean can anyone think of a blue creature that caw blade is currently running? and even if they do run frosty again, this is still probably 2-3 turns faster (and if it has a land destruction ability then it just keeps getting better,,,,, but will probably be non-basic and even thats probably to powerful. another ability to think about is that it might have Gideon ability or destory target tapped creature.

  26. Really should be called “War and Peace,” anything else is just aesthetically disappointing. Tolstoy is disappoint. Also, how has nobody made this reference yet? Oh yeah, the current state of education…

  27. I just realized that looking at the art probably won’t reveal anything. I highly doubt that wizards would commission artists for 2 sets and just not use half the art they commissioned, sounds like a BIG waste of money. Then again they may just decided who won the war in January and then commissioned the art

  28. It will definitely not be a repeat of any of the previous sword abilities, aka it will not be dealing damage or gaining life. Also, I don’t expect it to have an effect that doesn’t do anything immediately, which in my opinion would include giving +1+1 counters to your creatures. Destroy target land would certainly be a bit overpowered for better or worse, and after that if we actually think the “planeswalker ability” theory is where we should be looking we’re a bit short on options.
On a side note I always thought that the abilities were more specific spells than planeswalker abilities, see early harvest. I would start looking for iconic spells with cmc 3 or less for both red and white.
Flicker, stone rain and something like tap target permanent, it doesn’t untap during its controllers next upkeep seem like acceptable options off the top of my head

  29. +2/+2, Prot. white and red.
If the equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, target permanent doesn’t untap during the controller’s next upkeep and (idk what red could be like) ..

  30. They can call it Sword of Garbage and Uselessness and it will likely still rock our world. πŸ™‚

  31. Thank you to everyone who has said that it won’t be lightning helix or have “destroy target non-basic land.” If either of those were true, it would too good in Legacy without having the ability of getting banned.

  32. I knew it. I told every person that would listen to me that this sword would be called War and Peace

SUCK ON IT EVERYONE ELSE I’M BETTER THAN YOU FOR STATING AN OBVIOUS NAME!

  33. my guess…
if this is the first combat phase, untap all your creatures and get another combat phase, and damaged opponent skips their next combat phase.

  34. Dudes, a good rule for ‘how powerful an ability can you put on this sword’ on one end would be ‘look at cost to equip, would this be a good cmc for a sorc speed spell’, it’s going to be equip 2, the following things are cool 2cmc sorc spells: opponent discards a card, put a 2/2 into pla, mill 10 cards, and uhm ‘untap all lands’ (okay, that seems a little skeezy, but still). ‘Target player skips an attack step might actually be reasonable at this point… ‘fog’ is more or less the same thing. There are fog effects in standard now, right? Destroy target land. Uhm… you’re aware that they are never going to reprint stone rain, which was cmc 3, right?

  35. Arthur…no. That basically says, “if equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, that player loses the game.”

  36. Tap and doesn’t untap is more a blue ability than a white one. Also, land destruction out of it would be a bit too strong. If you’re looking for iconic abilities, I’d see Pyroclasm and the faux vigilance (untap all creatures). Deal damage and gain life has already been done and too close to Lifelink. Also, the swords don’t have joint abiliies, they have two separate, unrelated abilities. You won’t see Lightning Helix, or for that matter, Double Strike. Red is harder to come up with something, as there’s already a sword with damage, and red doesn’t do that much else that could trigger on dealing damage to a player.

Also people talking about the name, everyone knew it was going to be either War and Peace or Order and Chaos, or similar. It’s not like we don’t have four other swords to prove the naming convention. S’like saying “I bet it’ll give +2/+2 and pro red/white!”

And if you think the existence of another sword is somehow going to make Caw Blade worse, you’re mad.

  37. Maybe crush will actually make some sideboards.

I don’t know who is going to win the war, nor do I really care, but is it just be that the Mirran saying, ‘we will endure’ is the most depressing mantra ever? Um, bro, you need to do more than endure.

  38. my guess is that the sword will give haste for the red part….. and for the white part iI would like to see them skip there next attack step but that almost seems to good

  39. War = destroy target artifact (shatter)
Peace = put target creature on top of it’s owners Library (excommunicate)

two common effects, in their colors.
And, both could be relevant in the set – destroy other swords, and bounce Sunblast angels

  40. the sword will not target an artifact or creature with negative; if your opponent has neither and you only have sword and its holder you HAVE to target them.

It will also not produce +1/+1 counters because mark rosewater has already said they will not include both +1/+1 and -1/-1 in the same block.

  41. Could be something like:
    – Target permanent/creature doesn’t untap during its controllers next untap step (like Ajani Vengeant)
    – Mini-Wheel of Fortune (Draw X discard X or vice versa)

Destroying artifacts is a definite possibility though. It could even be:
    – Destroy target enchantment
    – Destroy target artifact
Though I would say that it fits less with the name.

  42. Red: threaten effect for target permanent? It wouldn’t be great for creatures (being that you’ve already attacked), but stealing a Jace, TMS or a Tectonic Edge for a turn might not be bad.

White: tap target permanent; that permanent doesn’t untap during its controller’s next untap phase? Keeping something tapped is rather useful; I’ve won PTQ matches that way with AJ Vengeant.

  43. actually, the more we talk about it,
“Destroy Target Non-Basic Land” for the red effect, seems possible.
Tectonic Edge isn’t considered unreasonable, and these swords ARE mythic!

  44. The white ability could be “that player’s creatures can’t attack next turn”. Seems peaceful. πŸ™‚ Would make for a nice combination with some land destruction.

  45. So I was wrong, Aaron Forsythe tweeted this:

@samstod We did playtest Blinding Angel on that Sword. It didn’t make it πŸ˜‰

Back to the drawing board I guess. How about sword of Inferno and Armageddon? That seems legit.

  46. You guys have to remember that all of the other swords in the cycle have been “Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player” so a lot of abilities are out, such as haste.

They probably won’t do lifegain/direct damage. I could see destroy target non-creature artifact and exile target permanent until end of turn. Though those are both pretty powerful.

  47. Y is everyone saying destroy target land of artifact. if it is going to be something on that line it is going to say destroy a land or artifact to that player damaged be the equipped creature. so it wont kill anything u control

  48. well, yea, that’s a given…
just avoiding typing out the whole text box!
they also won’t use the letter U to indicate anyone :0

  49. @pastprophet

i didn’t type anything that would reference that they would put u on a card. it was a different sentence stating that the ability wouldn’t destroy anything that U would control

  50. I’m only going to try saying this once more: destroying a non-basic land IS WAY TOO POWERFUL. In Legacy, that would give every single deck access to Wasteland/Loam… except better. Remember, Standard is not the only format in existence.
—-You can’t even kill this equipped creature in Legacy, as it has pro-STP and pro-Bolt.

  51. U can doom blade it… go for the throat it…. terror it… bounce it… revoke existance it aka exile…..

  52. If more than one deck used Go for the Throat or Doomblade (Mono-Black, The Gate), that might be reasonable.

As for killing the Sword, there are only two decks prevalent decks that run any artifact destruction MD.

And as for countering it, Vial/Stoneforge decks are becoming more and more prevalent, which makes even that possibility less likely.

  53. Sword of Tolstoy? I didn’t think wizards wasn’t as obvious as blizzard with its culture references.

  54. U know the meta for legacy would change if the sword had land destruction. More decks will run artifact removal. Every color in magic has some type of removal eather to creature or the artifact. U could also add hand disruption like extripate in black to get rid of it. The LD aspect of it isn’t to overpowered unless ur run the same old deck that are being ran now

  55. I think its a gideon jura type effect. If equipped creature deals combat dmg to target player, all his creatures must attack(war), and destroy target tapped creature(peace).

  56. Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

I would like to know why WotC commissioned a different artist to do SoBaM, SoFaF, and this one… the art for the first two swords in the cycle were over-the-top amazing. The latest three look ok, but nothing to write home about.

    Mark Zug > Chris Rahn

Just my opinion, don’t lynch me =P

  57. going off on the planeswalker thing: …tap target permenant, it does not untap during its controls next untap set. Gain control of target creature (end of turn?).

btw, for those that need help seeing what walkers, its Ajan’s first and Bolas’ second ability.

  58. “LOL I pretend to know who Leo Tolstoy is”

Yes, we were all pretty certain it’d be War and Peace. Not only is it the title of a cinderblock disguised as a book, it’s also just an aesthetically pleasant cultural expression. The two words just pair well. Not only that, but the WAR (remember that?) is presumably coming to its end in this set.

  59. @Crawdizzle, heaven FORBID the Legacy format change with new cards! We couldn’t POSSIBLY make it so that there’s a new powerful card in a format other than standard, because that would be soooo unfair to the people who spent $5000 building their perfect legacy deck.

You sound like such a complainer. If the new set completely shakes up the way Legacy is played, that’s what people in the R&D business like to call a “Good Thing.” Formats grow stale with time, and how much has changed in legacy over the past year because of new cards?

  60. this will be lighting helix +2+2 whenever deals combat damage to a player deal 3 damage to target creature or player gain 3 life!

  61. I’m glad that whenever this card does connect with an opponent, you get to say “I SoWaP in you in the face!”

  62. the more i think about it, its not going to be helix (been done, and not good enough). its not going to add or remove attack steps (else the card might as well read “when player if hit by equipped creature, you win the game”).

the land destruction is kind of questionable. on one hand its not powerful enough (if the other swords are anything to go on), but on the other after a couple turns that ability can win you the game….. so I dont think its 100% out of the question. the 1/1 with battlecry is also a pretty decent idea, it doesn’t win you the game out right, but it makes a clear threat to your opponent.

I’d like to see the white ability either tap something, bounce something, or exile something.

  63. Sword of War and Peace 3
    Artifact – Equipment
Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from red and from white.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, if it’s the first combat phase of the turn, tap target creature and untap equipped creature. After this phase, there is an additional combat phase.
    Equip {2}

  64. Everyone who thinks it will destroy an artifact get real. They aren’t going to make a sword that destroys your opponents swords.

  65. This will NOT do direct damage, sword of fire and ice already does. I guarantee it. I think it will be something like, +2/+2 pro red/white and when ever equiped creature deals combat damage to a player prevent up to 4 damage before your opponents next turn ends and 2(or3) target creatures must attack next turn if possible.

  66. Elspeth's Avenger

Teninchrichard(gross) is correct when he says there is no burn ability for this card. also no life gain because light and shadow has that ability. i would love to see it called Sword of Prayer and Pillage. i think its gonna be “sword protection ability with +2/+2 and then “destroy target non-basic land and something else”

  67. I was looking at Archangel of Strife and couldn’t help notice her abilities and the relation to war and peace. Could the new sword have abilities similar to this card.

  68. It won’t make a creature because SoBaM does that already.

I think destroy/exile target artifact or enchantment that opponent controls, and probably some pseudo-sleep effect, even though thats more blue. Destorying tapped creatures or destroying lands seems too much. As long as it isn’t destroy artifact (shatter) and enchantment (white anything) and thats it, because that would be pretty bad. A blink effect seems too situational and not powerful enough.

  69. +2/+2, Prot. white and red.
Opponent cannot attack next turn/return target red instant or sorcery from your graveyard to your hand.

  70. Excommunicate would be a good ability for the white. It works with the Peace side, removing a creature from battle without killing it. It would have to be a may effect though, which so far hasn’t existed on a Sword yet.

Red could be destroy target non-basic land. It would be really powerful, and could have the same problem if you have to destroy your own land. Take an additional attack step would be interesting, but it’s pretty wordy and swords are already short on text box space.

  71. How many people just wrote ‘deal 3 gain 3’ and didnt actually THINK about it or READ the other comments by people who DID think about it?
    Go on, own up….

“Whenever Equipped creature deals combat damage to an opponent if it’s the first combat phase of the turn, untap that creature. After this phase, there is an additional combat phase.”

thats my EDUCATED guess, might only be one of the abilities though.

  72. War effects are usually “take another combat step.” Peace can mean a lot of things. If it follows peacekeeper’s effect “creatures cannot attack.”

If it reads: you may untap equipped creature and take another combat step only usable once per turn and your opponent cannot attack next turn. This will absolutely broken beyond belief.

  73. I do not think it will shut down your opponents attack phase all together simply because throwing it on an unblockable creature(or even a cheap flyer) would effectivley stop your opponent from winning, period. The more I think about it the more I do agree it may kill nonbasics, or at least ruin them somehow, legacy DOES need some new relevant content(the other 2 new swords arnt seen in 95% of equipment decks(trust me, ive tried them in my stoneforge aggro deck and they are just sluggish, the loxodon warhammer is better by a margine(and that is even irrelivant with the jitte flying around)). Sword of fire and ice is going up to $50 and there is no reason another sword couldn’t do the same. Anyway, my point is if it is going to stop attackers it will only stop one or 2 a turn. My next point is that I don’t think it will destroy artifacts because it would kill other swords(thats a farfetched assumption but it makes sense to me) and I don’t think it will kill enchantments because that is NOTNOTNOTNOTNOT a red ability. Look it up, there is not a SINGLE red card that destroys a single enchantment. The white ability is peace and I’m pretty sure peaceful folks don’t hop around with huge swords chopping precious enchantments to bits for effect. Role play this stuff people.
last, I dont think it will prevent damage AND stop attackers seeing as how none of the other swords combo with themselfs, it would be too powerful, or worthless in certain instances and the swords are all useful all the time at least a little.

    All that said I think the sword will be along the lines of;

    3cast, 2 equip (obvious)
+2/+2 protection from red and white (obvious)

(war)-destroy target non-basic land (not so obvious and REALLY good 50% of the time(75% in legacy))

(peace)-2(or maybe 3) target creatures may not attack during your opponents next turn (not so obvious, but I think it is very likely especially with huge infect creatures running about causing all sorts of ruckus. This would be useful about 75% of the time in standard and 50% in legacy.)

The sword might be broken, you just never know what they will print to sell cards(look at sword of fire and ice… just busted to pieces).
Also keep in mind that this sword is fetchable my the stoneforge mystic and potentially useable on turn 3. Here is how.

T1-land and any 1 or 0 drop creature(would have to be an artifact tho).
T2-land and mox(this can come in any time) play stoneforge mystic and grab your Excalibur.
T3-land Stoneforge the sword into play(activating metalcraft) than equip it to your 1drop and swing.

  76. My next point is that I don’t think it will destroy artifacts because it would kill other swords(thats a farfetched assumption but it makes sense to me) and I don’t think it will kill enchantments because that is NOTNOTNOTNOTNOT a red ability. 78. my prediction is it will do something along the lines of tap target creature, it doesn’t untap during it’s player’s upkeep, put a +1/+1 counter on a creature you control

  79. so no one read my post?

Gain control of target creature and tap target permenant, it does not untap during its controler’s untap step.

  80. Some possibilities:

Whenever blablabla deals combat damage to an opponent, choose a creature he/she controls; that creature cannot attack next turn.

Some type of burning inquiry effect?

LD wouldn’t go down well. Comparing the effect to tectonic edge isn’t helpful either because tec edge requires them to have at least 4 lands.

Damage is out of the question. So is +1/+1 counters because the set already has -1/-1 counters.

An incite effect isn’t out of the question.

Token production isn’t a possibility since SoBaM features token production.

Tap target permenant, it does not untap during its controler’s untap step -> this is mostly a blue ability (frost titan). White gets to tap stuff, but not lock it down like that.

  81. blatantly untap all creatures you control, and creatures your opponent controls attack next turn if able.

  82. @dali: “…but not lock it down like that”
i guess someone didn’t tell that to Ajani Vengeant…
and i guess SoWaP wouldn’t acctually tap it, but just keep it from untaping.

  83. i would have to disagree on the forcing opponents creatures to attack. that honestly seems bad in most match-ups. and untapping seems more of a green ability (copperhorn, Vitalize, ect…). exiling a permanent (maybe a converted mana cost limit), or turning the permanent into a 0/1 with no abilities until your next upkeep seems like it might be fun. and what are peoples thought on something like a pyroclasm vs their guys only per time it hits. gets around that whole direct damge issue, and is a really good ability BUT it doesn’t break the format.

so something like “equipped creature gets +2/+2, protection from red and white. when equipped creature deals damage to a player, deal 2 damage to all creatures that player controls, and exile target permanent with converted mana cost 3 or less”

  84. white effect will probably be blink style, or tap permanent and no untap next turn, red probably untap and another attack step…

  85. War and Peace.

War is the red component, and will have something to do with combat or direct damage. It would be appropriate to apply some sort of battle cry mechanic here, but that obviously presents diffuculties since sword wouldn’t trigger until combat damage. It would make no sense for something labeled “war” to destroy lands or artifacts and destroying lands, even non basics, would be way too powerful, and destroying artifacts would be too narrow.

Peace is the white component, and also implies something to with combat or possibly life gain.

So I could see something like:

    1) “When equipped deals combat damage to a player, Sword of War and Peace deals 1 damage to a target creature or player and 1 damage to another target creature or player. You gain life equal to the damage dealt in this way.” Limited lightning helix effect.

    2) “When equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, each other creature you control that dealt combat damage to defending player this turn deals 1 damage to that player and creatures your opponent controls can’t attack next turn.” Ghetto battle cry combined with pacifism effect.

  86. i wish people would stop suggesting the white ability will stop your opponent from attacking. i mean honestly ask yourself this. “is there ANY deck that can win the game, (or at least have a semi chance) if they are not allowed to ever attack?”

  87. ^ It wont be direct dmg and it wont be life gain. They already did this with Sword of Fire and Ice and Sword of Light and Shadow.

Red means doing direct dmg, destroying land, or destroying artifacts. It wont be the first, it will probably lean towards the later two.

White means life gain, tapping, preventing dmg, protection, etc. I can see it tapping a permanent, it doesnt untap during its controllers next uptap step.

  88. Let’s go over what we know and what we don’t:
The name is Sword of War and Peace, that is confirmed on the Mirrodin website.
The sword will have a Mirran watermark. Confirmed on the Mirrodin website.

    Now what we can assume:

The sword will cost 3 to cast, 2 to equip, and give +2/+2 and protection from white and red. It will also have two abilities that trigger on the equipped creature dealing combat damage to a player. That is it. Of the two triggered abilities one will be “beneficial to you” and one will be “detrimental to the opponent”. One of the abilities will fit in the white colour pie, the other will fit into the red. This is assumed from cycle symmetry with the other swords.

We can assume that the red ability will not be direct damage, and that the white ability will not be lifegain, as those abilities have already been used (Sword of Fire and Ice had a shock, Sword of Light and Shadow had a Healing Salve). Although we can’t be certain, we have seen no indication that they will re-use abilities.

Also, interpolating from the other swords, it is likely that one of the triggered abilities will be a form of card advantage. FaI had draw a card, LaS had disentomb, BoM gave you a 2/2, FaF made your opponent discard. This is more cycle symmetry, but it is shakier than the previous examples.

Finally, and this assumption is my weakest. Neither ability will have a normal game state where it blanks. For example, I feel an ability will not be something along the lines of “destroy target artifact creature” or “destroy target non-basic land” because there is a fair chance that there will not be an artifact creature or non-basic land on the board when the ability is triggered. This is because the swords are supposed to be all upside, and I doubt that they’d but an ability which may force you to blow up your own artifacts or lands.

  89. mark rosewater already said that there not going to print anything that gives +1/+1 counters in Scar block. talking with friends this weekend we think it is going to say

when equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, destroy a non-basic land that player controls, and put two 1/1 myr tokens in to the battlefield.

the way this is stated it doesn’t make it to powerful, it u play the white leyline in negates the LD part.

  90. Nobody seems to have mentioned this, but there’s one potential concept for the red side of the sword that makes a lot of sense to me that is kind of a riff off of the card “war’s toll” from dissension. Something along the lines of “when equipped creature deals damage to a player <> and Tap all lands that player controls. i think its unique enough to feel mythic, and taking away a player’s ability to interact with you during your 2nd main phase would put a cool spin on the game.

  91. red also takes creatures
exp: Mark of Mutiny, Act of Treason, Traitorous Instinct, (Bazzar Trader), (Metalic Mastery)

Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs anyone?

  92. defending player sacrifices a permanent, return to the battlefield target creature in your graveyard that was put there from the battlefield this turn.

  93. just thought i’d point out that the sword could have a may ability as the raise dead option on light and shadow is in fact a may, so “you may destroy target artifact” is within the realm of possibility. I think rather than LD its more likely to have something like the opponent cant play lands next turn or something.

  94. Target creature attacks next turn if able. Target creature can’t attack next turn.

  95. Reusable LD is simply not going to be printed. I mean, such would be seriously unfun. I cannot see WOTC doing it. Also, no blinding mage effect according to Rosewater tweet.

  96. ‘unfun’ ?
as much so as having all your lands gradually destroyed by Argentum Armor?
which isn’t even dependent on being hit by the creature, but merely triggered by their attacking!

  97. It is dependent actually attacking with the equipped creature, which, considering mana and equip costs, makes it balanced. A 3 cc, 2 equip sword that destroys lands and has another beneficial effect, as well as +2/+2 and 2 protections is not balanced.

  98. Aww so much for blinding angel ability, i realized it was too good because of planeswalkers.
One ability Must give some kind of card advantage and repeat LD is not something very fun even if they word it “sacrifices any non basic”. The card advantage component should most likely be red since its white on LS and Blue on FI. Light shadow made me think of something.
Return target sorcery and/or instant from your Yard!!! This is a bit like sun forger as well.
Peace ability is most likely a tap down. The only other Red ability i can think of that would work with War is all op creatures must attack you. This would not be half bad allowing more sword hits. Any how I m sure this card will b good no mater what it says hehe.

  99. How about untapping your creatures and getting another attack step. It would obviously have to be worded in such a way that you didn’t get infinite attacks! Could also go nicely with a threaten effect.

“when equipped creature deals combat damage to a player gain control of target creature that player controls until end of turn. Untap all creatures you control except equipped creature. After this phase there is an additional combat phase”

I don’t think it will be Lightning Helix. As others have already said there is too much crossover with Fire/Ice and Light/Shadow. Plus it is waaaay too powerful!

  100. How about:

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from red and from white. Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, all of target opponents creatures must attack next turn if able and you may return up to one artifact or enchantment card with converted mana cost 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. Equip 2
    .

  101. How about:

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from red and from white. Whenever this card get previewed, people make dumb comments on what they think it will do.

Honestly I haven’t heard one suggestion that wasn’t dumb or far-fetched.

  102. @Marcus, I have to admit that I think your idea might me more of a sarcastic joke than an actual attempt at guessing the abilities of the sword, speaking of far fetched abilities.

  103. u really didnt think ANY of those ideas were plausible? i saw some that were ok but really the only things i saw that are probable are
    [red]
-some brand or extra combat step

    [white]
    -excommunicate
    -tap
    OR
-keep a creature tapped (not both)

i am quite sure that exiling or or blowing up something is out of the question, since the possibility of blowing up one of your permanents would be required if ur opponent controls no permanents of the said type (and target permanent would be WAY to broken). as was said in earlier comments, this sword is very likely to follow the same blueprint as the other swords:

(3)(2) cost and equip, +2/+2 pro. color/color, one beneficial effect for you, one detrimental effect for your opponent; one of which being card advantage.

there is not much else that can be said about it. we will just have to wait and see.

  104. i hope its not a “target player cant attack during his next turn, cause that would make gideons +2 pretty useless”

  105. The “Peace” in the name really does remind me of a kicked Orim’s Chant where the opponent can’t attack next turn. Gideon forces an attack and this would prevent one. Very potent indeed.

  106. teninchrichard

    whenever creature deals combat damage to a player;
THAT player’s creatures with power greater than the equipped creature cannot attack you during THAT player’s next turn, and (maybe, hopefully) destroy target non-basic land

  107. its going to be interesting to see what this card is going to do. in the past cards with “war” in the title have done this like made it so guys cant block or have to attack. and the white could be like an ajani vengeant type thing where it taps down a permanent and keeps it from untapping for a turn.

  108. Having the sword provide an extra attack step if it connects goes with the battle cry theme, so it is likely that will be the red ability. I doubt either ability will be removal. And lifegain has already been done, so I am guessing the white ability will be flicker your own permanent( Like venser’s).

  109. Preventing your opponent from attacking will not break anything. Blinding angel was even reprinted after she had busted a metagame. We found ways of dealing with it back then. We’ve gone through an orim’s chant imprinted on iscrone’s scepter. All these things designed to lock your opponent out of the game and yet decks still prevailed.

Most likely will give a counter “creature with counter cannot attack or block.” I don’t think it will do the blink effect as it has nothing to do with “peace.”

This is also the last set in the block which are notoriously bad. Printing something like this will drive sells even if the set is bad.

  110. Um… has anyone thought of something as simple as:

White – Target creature damaged player controls cannot attack during that player’s next combat phase.
Red – Target creature damaged player controls must attack if able during that player’s next combat phase.

Seems like a legit combination. Def war and peace them.

  111. I am expecting this sword to be as equally breakable as the other 2 thus far. i would not put it past them for the Peace side of this blade to be “Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, that player skips his or her next combat phase.” Giving “Mystic Deck Whatever” all the tools it needs to just win every game ever. On a more serious less bitter note I am happy to see the sword cycle finished even though mystic decks now have fetch pro-whatever removal you are playing.

  112. maybe …just maybe imagine this sword doing this:
+2/+2 protection from red and white
when equiped creature deal combat damage put a +1/+1 counter on all creatures you control, deal 2 damage to all creatures your opponent control
i know that’s broken but it would be fantastic to have that

  113. So besides the basics we have a aggressive red ability, and a defensive white ability.

    PEACE(WHITE):

Tweets confirm Peace isn’t Blinding Angle or blinding mage (no tapping or skipping of opponents combat phase)

It could still tap and not untap for a turn ala Kor Grappler, but i feel the statement that it wouldn’t be a blinding mage implies a lack of tapping all together.

    so white(peace) could be:
1: Blink(I think this to be likely, it’s white, its a moment of respite AKA peace, and Mark Rosewater loves it.
2: Returner of permanents 3 or less. (not a bad chance, but… hmmm i don’t know.)
3: Target(or targets) cteature can’t attack during it’s next attack phase.(Peace w/out blinding angle and the tweet did say they were testing the blinding angle b4 deciding against it so it could be a weaker version.
4: after combat vigilance AKA untap all creatures you control. It’s not that white of an ability(more-so green) but green did land last set and white has done this on surprise defense instants. and this works well with some War abilities(see below)…It COULD be “until the end of you next turn creatures may block as though they weren’t tapped.” White has done that too. This doesn’t seem real peace-y to me.
    5:

    WAR(RED):

It isn’t lightning bolt and probably isn’t a derivative such as 2 dmg split up. Probably isn’t a discard and draw due to the fact that has nothing to do with war.

1: Destroy(possibly a “you may…”) target Artifact. Without the ‘You may’ option the only way i’m seeing this printed is with blink as the white ability because otherwise it could force kill itself in casual which is un-fun. With the option whether to do it or not it… i don’t know, it would be a fitting end to the set w/ a sword that destroys other swords. I also feel destruction of any kind is very warlike. I dislike how this would be virtually useless against non-artifact decks. I always felt the swords abilities did something no mater what, but it could still happen.

2: Same as b4 but w/ non-basic land: same problems as b4. I do like how this would shake up legacy, but i feel this would be almost of no use in casual. this would be even more of a Stupid good/no use feel than artifact. I would enjoy this though, as i tend to avoid non-basic.

3: All(or several targeted, or just 1) creatures your opponent control attack next turn if able. This is what feels the most right to me. this is pure War flavor, and works well with #4 in the peace section.

4: Pyroclasm… i feel this different enough from SoF&I’s shock to be viable also has a war flavor, doesn’t kill the equipped creature. and works well with the blink ability. I wouldn’t be surprised by this.

    5:

    MY SWORD PICKS
    white #1 w/ red#3
    white #1 w/ red#4
    white #2 w/ red#3
    or
    white#4 w/ red#3

I would be surprised by red #1 or 2 actually happening, but i would be impressed.
and its not like I’m perfect or anything; it could easily be #5/#5.

read threw all the other comments, so these arn’t all my ideas, just a few of my own and what i liked/ disliked of others.
    thanks for reading.

  114. Sword of War and Peace {3}
    Artifact – Equipment
Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from red and from white.

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to an opponent, slap that player across the face with all your might, and then apologize with genuine sincerity.

    Equip {2}

There you have it: War and Peace

  115. Is did anyone even pay attention to the video? The mirran’s are all atleast part phyrexian, it’s just the there will over powered the phyrexian teachings. So, a “Phyrexian” holding the new sword is quite possible

WE WILL ENDURE! NEW PHYREXIA WILL FALL!

  116. I’m thinking the red part would maybe be haste and the white maybe return an artifact or enchantment from you graveyard to your hand

  117. The blades of the sword most def isnt red and white – more like red and yellow. Protection from Red and Yelllow? Are they gonna introduce a new color … OMG! πŸ˜‰

  118. ___What about a Stone Rain as the red effect? Super-powerful, but I don’t see a lot of other red signature abilities that could be activated by combat damage. For the white, what about an Oust effect? White tempo-control really isn’t bad, but nor is it overpowered. I think that could balance out. I agree with what @Brian said, I think Planeswalker abilities are legit.

  119. There are many card effects in red that actually make the game chaotic, such as Warp World, etc. It’s very likely we could see a watered-down version of one of these cards.

However, the name of the sword is the Sword of War and Peace; as we’ve seen with all the past swords, particularly the recent-most two, wizards has correlated the two effects with what is most closely related to the words used in the sword. Feast; untapping one’s lands. Famine; losing a card from one’s hand. Body; a 2/2 wolf. Mind; being milled. All are representative of the words described.

As such, War to me represents (and while some of these are obviously overpowered, we may see watered-down versons…) combat modifiers, extra combat phases, forcing creatures to attack, etc. or perhaps the destruction / devastation of war, which could be represented by a shatter-type effect, and land destruction, though the latter is doubtful…

Peace would be something that actively prevents the “war”, so preventing creatures from untapping, attacking, or the like would seem to be the best fit.

  120. “Destroy target non-basic land, and exile target creature until the beginning of your next end step.”

There’s no debate here that land removal adequately represents red, for thematic purposes. The debate is whether the ability is too strong or not, for the swords. Selective non-basic land removal is too strong, but mandated removal ends up being balanced, as it will threaten your own non-basic land prospects, if your opponent lack them. Such a sword would at times lock its own self down, requiring you to wipe your own lands if you want to attack. That could be a new level of x factor for the swords (much more uncertain than the milling of an opponent without a milling agenda that Body and Mind can cause). Then again, such a chaotic ability could not help but thematically represent red even further.

The usefulness of the creature blink effect will also not be guaranteed, if there are no particularly exploitable targets. In fact, this effect might end up blinking the sword’s own wielder, un-equipping the sword, which, by the way, demonstrates the peace bit quite nicely. If you do use it on one of your own creatures, to no other effect, it will have sort of practically given that creature vigilance for the turn (which is very white).

So that’s my prediction… it’s doesn’t automatically turn the game, but it will if it is sufficiently exploited… just like any of the swords… Remember, Feast and Famine’s discard ability isn’t helpful if you’re opponent is aggressive enough to play all of his/ her cards, and it’s land untapping isn’t useful if you’ve out of spells and abilities. Body and Mind’s wolf token gain is the more objectively useful ability, to balance out the fact that milling the opponent is sometimes entirely useless, or worst, helpful to them, if they are able to exploit graveyards. And so, I think my predicted abilities for War and Peace will fit in nicely with the swords of Scars.

  121. Sword of War and Peace-3

    Equip 2
Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from red and from white.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, equipped creature gains haste and lifelink until end of turn.

    Maybe a bit too good

  122. haste n lifelink until end of turn aftr combat damage was delt fo the turn…..

    word of War and Peace-3

    Equip 2
Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from red and from white.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, blink target permanent and controller may enter another combat phase after this one if it was the first combat phase for thje turn

  123. Sword of War and Peace-3

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from red and from white.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, destroy target non-basic and exile target permanent until the begining of your next end step.

    Equip 2

You get both war and peace. I am hoping its like a glimmerpoint stag (meaning permanent, not just a creature). Also it would be a good way to replace tech edge when Zendikar block leaves standard.

  124. Surprisingly, my uncle works at WotC and its not red and white, and Red and Blue.

    Pro Red, Pro blue

Also, there 2 other planeswalkers in this set.

  125. no way it will have “destroy target nonbasic” as you will have to blow up your own lands in some situations and that is just way too good when you blow up theirs for free(ish).

no way it will have any “MAY” abilities, e.g. you may destroy target nonbasic, since the others swords don’t. therefore it will not have you may destroy target non-basic as that is just insanely good

same goes for destroying artifacts: either you’ll blow up your own or it’s too good

as for the white abillity, i could see it being Ajani Vengeant’s +1 (permanent does not untap) as that was already on a RW card and is not super-insanely powerful though it would be very good.

i predict the red ability will be pretty weak as they (supposedly) won’t use direct damage and the other options are pretty weak since they can’t use destroy target non basic or destroy target artifact or whatever.

the ajani vengeant +1 is definitely something i could see on there

  126. just imagine how broken this is:

sword of war and peace 3
equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has pro red and pro white
whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, destroy target nonbasic land that player controls and target permanent that player controls doesn’t untap during its controller’s next untap step.
    equip 2

    uhhh sure that seems fine

  127. @dk yeap it is to broken, Imagine destroying one land and tapping other that won’t happen.

The land destruction seems fine, but won’t happen. If you see the development of Magic during history, land destruction has been avoided during last years.
If you see magic started with cards like Sinkhole which had 2 manas cc. Now after all this years the land destruction cost at least 4cc. It would really change the mana curve theory and will turn the game back to the days Armageddon was type 2. So I believe it is a little difficult that land destruction will be part of the Sword.

Maybe it will make the land unavailable like tapping and for white maybe it will get the Oblivion Ring ability with the same counter, like when the sword is destroyed return the Permanents removed.

I thought about haste for red but that would be useless according to the sword mechanism.

Maybe for red can be like a gamble ability like look your library for a card then discard one at random, or draw two cards then discard 2 at random.

  128. So, I think my favorite creature to equip this little $50 beauty to is Mirran Crusader. Good Morning, protection from every color except blue. Oh wait, that means that my poor, miserable opponent can only block with a blue(or artifact) creature, (or more likely tap it down with a tumble magnet for a few turns until they can cast a Day of Judgement). Nice to finally meet you, I don’t even care what the stupid thing does when I deal damage to my opponent, but whatever it is, its going to trigger twice! First strike damage, then regular damage; all while getting there for eight in the process. Convenient that Stoneforge and Mirran Crusader are both white creatures? If you’re planning to play this new sword, I suggest you pick up your Crusaders now, while they’re cheap. I doubt they’re going to stay that way. I should note that Thrun, the Last Troll also seems a decent target as they cant tap him down with a magnet, and when they do cast that DoJ you can simply smile and pay two to regenerate him…. Yes, Sword of War and Peace is BUSTED when used in a deck with the other swords and Stoneforge. My creature can have protection from the color or colors of my choosing. Crush is the new lightning bolt.

  129. Pro red white +2+2
White : Silence – Cant cast spells
    or even better Orims chant
Red : Return target instant or sorcery from graveyard to your hand

  130. regardless of what it is it will be an ability generally enexpensive, multiple attack phases are one of the most expensive red spells there are.
    a 2/2 wolf? inexpensive
top ten cards? (glimpse the unthinkable) inexpensive
    discard a card? inexpensive
the best ability ive seen so far is untapping all land

point being the sword will probably just emulate a cheap red and white spell
whether its an amazing replication or not is to be seen

  131. you’re missing what i think is an important point
look at the abilities from other swords and their mana costs
light and shadow: gain 3 life, return a crature card (W and B)
fire and ice: draw a card, 2 damage (U and R)
body and mind: mill 10, 2/2 bear (roughly UU and 1G)
feast and famine: discard one, untap lands (B and probably 1GG?)
so the next one must have a cost comparable to those, probably destroy target land wont happen (thats closer to 2R) and probably destroy target artifact as a mandatory effect wont happen because it would destroy itself! duh.
now that i said the cost stuff, try again other options that is always fun

  132. Maybe I’ll really think out of the box and not read any previous posts before guessing what has already been hammered into the ground with discussion. That’ll make for intelligent forward motion.

P.S. I think slapping the opponent then offering them a hug would be appropriate.

  133. I think the new abilities are even better than I had expected. I was honestly thinking something along the lines of a Lightning Helix, this no doubt trumps that in the early part of the game.

Sword of War and Peace (3)

    Artifact-Equipment
Equipped Creature gets protection from Red and White.

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player,
Sword of War and Peace deals damage to that player equal to
the number of cards in his or her hand and you gain 1 life for
    each card in your hand.

    Equip (2)

Seems pretty good to me. If its on Mirran Crusader, as I mentioned before, and I am attacking on my fourth turn(seems pretty reasonable, although with a Lotus Cobra, and a one drop mana producer, in play you could technically attack on turn three) my opponent will most likely have at least four cards in hand. Hello sixteen damage from a creature that has protection from four colors….. I guess I would gain some irrelevant life too. I dare my opponent to tap out when I have a Stoneforge Mystic and a Mirran Crusader in play. It will get ugly. Many other very interesting cards were just spoiled from the new set as well, standard will get a big face lift here soon.

  134. OH HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Been praying for this since the start of this set!
was kinda hoping it was gonna be called Sword Of Order And Chaos though =/

  135. this card is insane. they really went off in the deep end when designing this. “equipped creature gets +2/+2, has protection from red and white, and when it deals combat damage to an opponent they lose life equal to the amount of cards in their hand and you gain life equal to the amount of cards in your hand.” all this for a cast of 3 and an equip of 2? absurd.
