  1. As if there weren’t enough board sweepers to choose from… Also, since when was red the exiling type? Blue Zenith overpriced. Infect man-land was inevitable I guess, did they really have to give it evasion?

  2. @Xenadon: the problem with that is that you have to put non-Wurmcoil artifacts in your deck. You might just hit another Wellspring. But there is another card in here that makes Shape Anew a very good card. (Hint: it’s a land).

Knowledge Pool is interesting, especially paired with Big Jace. It also combos nicely with Painful Quandary (I’ve always wanted that card to be good).

Sangromancer should be called Hemomancer, though. Sanguis is a Latin term (and sangro- is not even a prefix that’s used in ANY English word) and -mancy is a suffix derived from Greek.

  3. knowledge pool remind me a lot of portcullis for limited, if you are ahead on the board the game is simply over. Sick limited bomb, your opponents only chance there being a shatter effect in the top three of either of your libraries, which isn’t impossible but it’s also not very likely.

  4. Black sun’s zenith looks very interesting, the fact that man lands can dodge it, that if it doesnt kill the bigger creatures out there it will still make them practical non threats, plus it eats Thrun for breakfast. Not quite damnation but still very good.
Slagstorm being rare is kinda weird… It’s not even all that much better than pyroclasm because pryroclasm was always easily splashable. Seems like a waste of a rare slot to me.

  5. I hope that knowledge pool doesn’t find its way to constructed. It would just turn stupid. Can’t wait for the black sun zenith, better than consume the meek. I have mixed feelings on the Core Prowler and the spine ish ah thing. Hope there’s an infect accelarator besides the plague myr.

  6. @Connor: Master’s Call and Dread Statuary can provide some redundancy there, too.

You could make a nasty little UW polymorph deck there – just add card draw, maybe some Wall of Omens, Wrath, Blightsteel Colossus to finish and some countermagic to back it up.

  7. @Vile

You must have misread Knowledge Pool, because if anything it’s the complete opposite of what you described. If you are ahead on board and then play this, suddenly on your opponent’s turn they get 6 free cards to choose from to get them out of the situation.

  8. Ichor Wellspring may just give us an artifact deck in Standard. Or even Time Sieve in Extended.

  9. @Lambert Cactus

I hadn’t seen Master’s Call, that would definitely be good with Shape Anew. Not so sure about Dread Statuary, though. At that point, you’re spending 7 mana on one turn to get out a 6 mana card, and you have to draw a Dread Statuary sometimes when you don’t need it. Seems like a bad deal.

  10. blue sun’s zenith is not overcosted, see: stroke of genius. i’ve heard thats received a little bit of play in its day…

granted, no tinker engine to abuse, it costs as much as it should

  11. im glad they kinda reprinted blinkmoth nexus. would’ve been better without infect for a t2 psuedo-affinity/metalcraft deck.

  12. Statuary is definitely the worst way to hit your mono-artifact Shape Anew target, and almost certainly unplayable. But if you’re hitting a Colossus, even its ridiculous 8 is better than hard-casting at 12. And the real advantage is you don’t have to have the bomb in your hand.

But yeah, mostly just there for completeness. 😛

  13. Inkmoth Nexus makes me desire trying out a white Infect deck… as it puts the most efficient version of a cheap artifact infect creature into the deck for Tempered Steel to buff. I’ve tested a similar deck already without besieged cards that was explosive with the right draws just powering out 3/3 or 5/5 ichorclaw myrs backed by fatty Corpse Cur recursion. 2 of these by turn 4 with a Steel in play is 6 poison damage in the air that avoids sorcery speed removal.

Also, the Spine intrigues me as it may be the perfect type of card for a mono blue control deck utilizing Grand Architect beside Trinket and the new Treasure Mage to search out the tool box of big artifacts to power out with the Architect. A few blue creatures and a sac outlet on the board and you could be destroying a permanent a turn. Not to mention Contagion Engine already existed for the mass removal needed.

Finally, I’d just like to say that i agree with an above post about Blue Sun’s Zenith, it’s right where it needs to be at casting cost considering it’s 1 more blue than Mind Spring but happens at instant speed, for draw-go control decks stressing the allowance of opponents maneuvers this could be the ultimate hand refill in late game with 7-8 mana laying around.

P.S. Even though I already said finally, Black Sun’s Zenith gets me VERY exited for the prospect of MBC returning, now just reprint Cabal Coffers and make my LIFE! Far better mass removal than Consume the Meek since the 5 mana poured into it SHOULD kill anything at a mana cost of 3 or less anyway and will actually shrink titans into Skinrender range or finish one already hit by him.

  14. Infect archeotypes are getting major boosts from this set. In limited I’m expecting at least 4 infect players per draft now that this new set is out and how many playable infect creatures are being spoiled.

  15. @Firekraag: Unlikely, unless they all want to train wreck. Only having one pack of this set and 2 SOM means the number of potential infect drafters will likely stay where it is.

  16. @Some Guy

Agreed as far as drafting goes, in fact for the first fiew days or weeks of drafting infect might be a dead archetype because too many people may try to jump into it after picking up 3-4 above average playable from MBS. Could be really fun to roll over them so easily for that short while.

On the other hand, sealed will see a LOT more infect than there used to be. Depending on the style there will probably be 2 or 3 packs of MBS being opened by people and it could easily give players 7-10 playable infect creatures for sealed pools, which will then just depend on whether or not they have the support to make it work or the bombs in other archetypes to pull them out of it.

  17. @ Brady

Why would anyone in their right mind drop Knowledge Pool and say go? I would want to be able to play at least two spells right away, whether it means having more land or just a few memnites.

  18. What, so you’re just going to hold your memnites until turn 6 so that you have the possibility getting a better spell? Or you’re going to wait until you have 8, 9, 10 mana? This definitely doesn’t lock up a limited game.
