James Ramsey Wins MagicFest Online Season 2 – Week 1

The second season of MagicFest Online is underway! The introduction of Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths has shaken up Standard. While new sets usually change the complexion of formats, Ikoria has added a new wrinkle in Companions – creatures you can cast from your sideboard if your deck meets a certain starting requirement. Companions have been the subject of much debate since their release, and this week of MagicFest Online provided some of the first major results in the new environment.

The Top 8 featured five decks that each used a different Companion. While the mechanic may be popular, it hasn’t stifled diversity. The elimination rounds featured some well known players including Seth Manfield, Ivan Floch, and Piotr Głogowski. It was Manfield with Temur Reclamation – with no Companion – who found himself in the finals against James Ramsey on Rakdos Sacrifice. Ramsey was running Obosh, the Preypiercer as his Companion and used the power of the odd creature to launch him to victory.
