Hey everyone! It’s time for some Pack 1, Pick 2! I haven’t done one of these in quite a while, but hopefully you’ll all still enjoy them. The honorable mention is gone, and the player passing to you takes the rare out of all the packs, because he or she is very lucky. Here’s what you’re working with this time:
Your first pick: Wharf Infiltrator
The pick here is basically between Wretched Gryff and Boon of Emrakul. Boon of Emrakul is the best card in the pack for sure. Wretched Gryff is the best blue card (okay, okay, it’s a colorless card). It’s worth noting that Wharf Infiltrator is at its best by a lot in a blue/black deck, due to the fact that whenever you discard a creature card from anywhere you can pay 2 mana to make a 3/2, not just from the other Wharf Infiltrator ability. Unfortunately, black is a very weak color. All that being said, I think I would still treat Wharf Infiltrator as a blue card here and not a blue/black gold card, as it’s still very strong in other decks. For that reason I’d choose the Wharf Infiltrator and leave myself open going forward.
Your first pick: Galvanic Bombardment
The red cards in this pack are too weak in comparison to both Ingenious Skaab and Haunted Dead to actually take them. That narrows your choice down to those two cards. RB Madness is a decent archetype, but it tends to look better than it actually is. Black is the worst color in Eldritch Moon, and UR is one of the best archetypes. Haunted Dead is probably a slightly better card than Ingenious Skaab overall, but due to Haunted Dead being black, the closeness in power level of the cards, and UR being such a strong archetype, I’d choose the Skaab here.
Your first pick: Somberwald Stag
The best card in the pack is Subjugator Angel. I think that the power level is close enough here that I would take Noose Constrictor. I will say that I do think Subjugator Angel is a relevant amount better than Noose Constrictor, but not quite enough to make it the pick here. I expected Noose Constrictor to be better than I think it is now, and I expected Subjugator Angel to be worse than it is now, so although I feel I’ve adequately adjusted, it’s possible also that I haven’t moved one or both cards enough in their respective directions yet, and I’ll end up thinking the power level difference here is so great that you should have taken Subjugator Angel.
Your first pick: Thalia, Heretic Cathar
This is a pretty weak pack and Boon of Emrakul is by far the best card. White and black are probably the two worst colors, but at least they pair well together. A big part of why is evident in this pack with the combo of Boon of Emraul and Ironclad Slayer. Now that you’ve picked up a Boon, you should be happy to prioritize a couple of Ironclad Slayers and hopefully use them to recur as many copies of Boon of Emrakul as you can pick up.
Your first pick: Drag Under
The pick here is between Lashweed Lurker and Thermo-Alchemist. UR spells and UG emerge are both very strong archetypes. My personal preference is slightly in favor of UR spells. I do, however, think that Lashweed Lurker is a better card. I also think it’s a bit easier to get the best cards in UG emerge than it is to get the best cards in UR spells. These two things combined would lead me to take the Lashweed Lurker in this instance.
Thanks everyone for reading. What are your favorite archetypes so far in Eldritch Moon Limited? What cards have overperformed or underperformed for you so far? Let me know in the comments. I’ll be back soon with more packs.
