What’s the Pick? Battle for Zendikar Pack 1 Pick 2 with Huey

Welcome back for another edition of Pack 1 Pick 2 with Battle For Zendikar. I’ve found Battle for Zendikar to be enjoyable to draft so far. I’m still very anti-green—I continue to find that any time I end up playing green, my deck performs very poorly, and I will continue to do my best to avoid the color. Let’s get to this edition’s packs:

Scenario #1

First pick: Smothering Abomination

The pack:

My Pick

Eldrazi Skyspawner.

The best black card is Malakir Familiar. The best blue card is Coastal Discovery. Coastal Discovery is not so much better than Eldrazi Skyspawner, though, that you should take it when the Skyspawner has such great synergy with the first pick. Spawns work well with Smothering Abomination as you can sacrifice them on your upkeep or cash them in for a card if your opponent removes Smothering Abomination. Malakir Familiar is black, but a worse card than Skyspawner, and actually doesn’t synergize with Smothering Abomination practically. I’d be happy to draft Skyspawner here and try to draft a UB devoid deck.

Scenario #2

First pick: Touch of the Void

The pack:

My Pick

Outnumber.

This is a pretty weak pack overall. The best card is Tajuru Warcaller, but I don’t intend to take a green card. After that the best card is Outnumber which is both a very good card and red, making it the natural pick out of this pack. I like Outnumber more than most people, and I’m pretty happy to start my draft with two removal spells, especially in the same color. Having two red cards also leaves you open to play any red archetype that seems open.

Scenario #3

First pick: Guardian of Tazeem

The pack:

My Pick

Tightening Coils.

This is another weak pack. Tightening Coils isn’t the best card in the pack, but all the cards are so close in power level that I think this is a pretty easy pick. I also like the fact that Tightening Coils goes well in any sort of blue control deck or a UW fliers deck, both decks in which Guardian of Tazeem really shines. While Guardian of Tazeem is admittedly so good that it is great in any deck, it is still fine to maximize for it.

Scenario #4

First pick: Serene Steward

The pack:

My Pick

Malakir Familiar.

The best card in the pack is Touch of the Void. My first pick Serene Steward is somewhat unusual for a first pick, but it can happen out of a weak pack. The best white card is Kor Bladewhirl, which synergizes with Serene Steward as both are Allies. Malakir Familiar is a good card, though, even without life gain synergies. But with the Steward as a first pick and the Familiar as a second pick, you can try to draft WB Allies with life gain, which is a really powerful deck if you can get it.

Scenario #5

First pick: Nettle Drone

The pack:

My Pick

Kozilek’s Sentinel.

Nettle Drone is another uncommon first pick, but I get more and more impressed with the card as time goes on. Naturally, it shines in a colorless deck. Kozilek’s Sentinel is the natural followup here as it keeps you in red, synergizes with your first pick, and it could even be argued is the best card in the pack. From here, I’d try to play either RB or UR devoid, both of which are very good archetypes.
