Welcome to another edition of Pack 1 Pick 2 with Battle for Zendikar. This is the second of the Pick 2 articles—I’d like to know if you have any suggestions as to how to improve the 2nd pick series. If so, let me know when you’re done reading. Here are the packs:
First pick: Ruination Guide
Ruination Guide is quite good in devoid decks, which is what I’d hope to draft if I ended up first-picking a Ruination Guide. The best card for that kind of deck here would be Nettle Drone. If you wanted to stay colorless and also in blue, there’s a Mist Intruder. The card that really stands out in this pack, though, is Stasis Snare. Stasis Snare is just SO much better than the other two cards. In this case, I would take Stasis Snare and just see what develops. It’s interesting because blue/white doesn’t actually support the colorless mechanic very well, because white is devoid of colorless cards all together (maybe LSV is ghostwriting this article). I would take Stasis Snare with the intention of just seeing what develops. I’d try to remain open to drafting any white or blue archetype.
First pick: Drowner of Hope
I think this is a super close pick between Vile Aggregate and Eldrazi Skyspawner. That statement alone really speaks to how much I like the blue/red arcehtype and how much I like Vile Aggregate. Eldrazi Skyspawner is one of the two best blue commons, the other being Clutch of Currents, and after a first-pick Drowner of Hope the gap is probably small enough that you’d actually prefer the Skyspawner to Clutch. Vile Aggregate is still a better card, but given that your first pick was such a powerful card blue card, a second blue card makes you 100% to play both, whereas you’d merely be likely to play Vile Aggregate.
First pick: Vile Aggregate
Touch of the Void.
Here’s another example that’s actually very similar to the previous one. Clutch of Currents is definitely a better card than Touch of the Void. Given that you’re intending to play a devoid deck but refuse to play green, your only options for a second color are blue and black. If either end up being an ingest deck, Touch of the Void is reasonably close in power to Clutch. And by taking Touch of the Void, you make it very likely that you get to play both of your first two picks. It’s possible that Clutch of Currents is enough better here that I’m making a small mistake, but I don’t think so.
First pick: Angel of Renewal
This pack is just horrible, there’s no other way to say it. Benthic Infiltrator and Titan’s Presence are both good cards, but neither of them pair particularly well with Angel of Renewal. Stonefury is a fine top-end removal spell in something like red/white Allies, and it’s also just the best card in the pack. This is another case where I’d just take the best card and intend to stay open and see what develops.
First pick: Stasis Snare
This pack has a few very good cards. You can immediately rule out Touch the Void, because it has little synergy with Stasis Snare compared to the other two cards. Gideon’s Reproach is the best mono-white card, so your decision is between that and Drana’s Emissary. I think Drana’s Emissary is a better card, and BW life gain/Allies are on the table. Both of those decks have an absurd top-end, and Drana’s Emissary helps reach that point. I’d take the Emissary here and look to draft one of those archetypes.
