Updates to the 2020 Magic Esports Partial Season

The COVID-19 Pandemic has already had a massive impact on the Magic world with delays in the release of different products as well as canceling major events. Today the Esports Team at Wizards of the Coast announced a series of changes for the remainder of the 2020 Partial Season. Cutting to the chase: without a clear path to safe tabletop games, major events are moving to MTG Arena for the foreseeable future.

The following events are being reconfigured and migrated to MTG Arena:

  • All previously cancelled and upcoming scheduled Players Tour events
  • Players Tour Finals Minneapolis
  • Mythic Invitational Core Set 2021
  • Mythic Invitational Zendikar Rising

In their stead, MTG Arena will host these invitation only events:

  • Players Tour – June 13-14 and 19-21 with $150,000 prize pool for each of four Players Tour events
  • Players Tour Finals – July 25-26 with Top 8 the following weekend on August 1 and a $250,000 prize pool
  • Mythic Invitational – August 28-30 with a $250,000 prize pool

The various Players Tours have been moved to take place over two weekends. Players who are qualified for the Players Tour will be able to enter one of the Players Tour tournaments.

There will be an additional tournament – the 2020 Grand Finals – which will take place after the release of Zendikar Rising. The Top 16 players from both the Players Tour Finals and the Mythic Invitational will compete in this event for a prize pool of $250,000.

The prize breakdown and formats of the various events can be found here. Notably, players who qualify for these events will have to provide their own cards on MTG Arena as opposed to receiving a stocked account for the tournament.Moving past the 2020 Partial Season, paths to qualifying for as-yet-unannounced events will be revealed in the coming weeks.

This announcement has caused quite a stir in the Magic community. Issues raised include the suspension of partial invites, the reduction in overall prize pool, and the inability to defer invitations. These are unprecedented times and if any of this information changes in the coming days we will be updating this post.

Update: After receiving feedback, the Esports team has decided that players who have qualified for the Players Tour events will receive full stocked Arena accounts.
