This Week in Magic

Coverage of Grand Prix New York

Broadcasting a GP takes a ton of resources, and initially we decided that covering New York wouldn’t be realistic. But after working on the problem, I’m going to try a portable, slimmed-down show for GP New York. We’ll start coverage in round 14 to bring you the most exciting point of the tournament—the Top 8 and the preceding deciding rounds. It’s a little different than the show you’ll see two weeks later from us at Grand Prix Los Angeles, but I’m excited to have a chance to make video coverage possible where it otherwise wasn’t.

Make sure to tune into that on Sunday starting at 3 p.m. EST at twitch.tv/channelfireball

Coverage could begin earlier, depending on the flow of the tournament. If that happens, we’ll be sure to update you on Twitter and Facebook.

Coverage of Grand Prix Los Angeles

Commentators: Luis Scott-Vargas, Gaby Spartz, William Jensen, and Marshall Sutcliffe

Start time: May 21st and 22nd, 9:15 a.m. PST

Announcement Concerning Changes to the Pro Club

In light of the strong reaction to the previous announcement, Wizards of the Coast walked back next year’s changes to the Pro Players Club. Now, the current 2016-2017 appearance fee structure will remain unchanged. On the future of these benefits, Helene Bergeot wrote: “between now and Pro Tour Eldritch Moon in August, we will reassess plans for improving the Pro Tour and premier play. In doing so, we will consult with members of the professional Magic community and take their further feedback into consideration.” The increased prize pool will remain intact for Worlds 2016.

Broken Promises: Thoughts on the Pro Tour Changes

Brian Kibler’s article on his site BMKGaming gives you a sense of how pro players reacted to the initial announcement, and his post illuminates the fact that the degree of the reaction from the community stemmed not from the actual content of the changes but the proposed timeline. The title says it all: “Broken Promises” rather than, say, just “Broke.”

Not Lost, But Totally Forgotten – The 5 Most Neglected Mythics of Standard

With Seasons Past and Pyromancer’s Goggles enjoying their time to bask in the post-Pro-Tour limelight, “Heavy Salami” highlights a few of the cards that haven’t lived up to their promise in the new format. #1 is a truly powerful card that I legitimately forgot existed.

Thoughts on Thoughtcast (Pauper)

Thoughtcast is good enough for Vintage, but in Pauper it hasn’t seen play outside of Affinity. Alex Ullman sets to work on cooking up a metalcraft list with long-forgotten hits like Vedalken Certarch and Ardent Recruit over at Gathering Magic.

Lessons from Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad

The Top 8 of a Pro Tour defines the format, and Jadine Klomparens offers a quick overview of the eight distinct archetypes from the Top 8 of Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad that will make up the ensuing metagame.

Whimsy & Beauty – An Interview With Rebecca Guay

We’re obligated to mention any article about an artist who illustrates Channel or Fireball, and this interview with 18-year Magic artist Rebecca Guay is a fascinating look into the career of one of the game’s best illustrators.

Post-Pro-Tour Primers on ChannelFireball

You won’t find a better resource for Deck Guides and primers on the best decks in Standard than right here at ChannelFireball, and the best part about this Pro Tour is that with so many of our contributors testing with different teams now, each of them had first-hand experience with a different archetype. I mean, you can read about The Pantheon’s crazy Seasons Past Control deck from Jon Finkel himself. This job is great.
