Updates to Arena, Ravnica Allegiance Guild Kits, and a Banned and Restricted List update. This is your weekly Magic news brief.
Banned and Restricted List Updated
The Banned and Restricted List was updated today. One card was added to the Modern banned list: Krark-Clan Ironworks. In the post, Ian Duke discusses the sustained strong performance of the deck, as well as the fact that it created a less than ideal play environment and viewing experience. Both Ancient Stirrings and Mox Opal were also on the chopping block, but Play Design felt that at this time Ironworks was the correct decision. Ironworks will be banned effective January 25th, but the ban takes effect on Magic Online today.
Pauper also got a mention in today’s announcement. While no cards were banned, they mentioned the interaction between Gush and Foil. The article details that there is not enough data at this time to warrant a change, but the format is under scrutiny moving toward the next Banned and Restricted list announcement on March 11, 2019.
There were no updates to the Banned List in Commander either. But the Rules Committee, an independent group that helps to steward the format, announced the formation of the Commander Advisory Group. The group will serve to help inform Rules Committee decisions and serve as a go-between between the community at large and the governing body. The initial members of the CAG are: Adam Styborski, Charlotte Sable, Josh Lee Kwai, Rachel Agnes, Ron Foster, and Shivam Bhatt.
MTG Arena Updates
Ravnica Allegiance has come to Magic: the Gathering Arena and with the newest set comes updates to the digital platform. The update includes solving the issue of receiving a fifth copy of a rare or mythic rare and information about best-of-three ranked play.
First up is the fifth copy issue. If a player were to open a rare or mythic rare in an Arena booster and they have four copies of the card already, one of two things will happen. If that player does not already have four copies of every rare or mythic rare in the set, they will receive a copy of a card they need of that rarity. If, however, a player has a full set of both rares or mythic rares, they will instead receive gems—20 for a rare and 40 for a mythic rare. In Limited play, the conversion to gems will happen after the event has concluded (commons and uncommons that would be above the fourth copy instead get added to vault progress). In the instance of individual card rewards, the same conversion to gems will apply for rares and mythic rares.
Best-of-three ranked play will be coming to preseason 2. Starting on January 31st, there will be an opportunity to play best-of-three in ranked Constructed. There will also be an update to Limited matchmaking.

Ravnica Allegiance Guild Kits
The Ravnica Allegiance Guild Kits have been revealed. These decks come with special guild specific basic lands, as well as alternate art versions of different legendary creatures. The legendary creatures are: Isperia, Supreme Judge for Azorius, Teysa, Orzhov Scion for Orzhov, Rakdos, Lord of Riots for Rakdos, Ruric Thar the Unbowed for Gruul, and Zegana, Utopian Speaker for Simic. The Ravnica Allegiance Guild Kits go on sale on February 15, 2019.
Clues to Mythic Championship Schedule
According to this page, there will be three Mythic Championships in 2019 that take place on Arena. During the massive esports announcement, two Pro Tours were removed from the schedule. If the page is accurate, there will be seven Mythic Championships in the 2019 season, which represents an increase of one major event from the previous schedule.
Statement on Rei Sato
Magic Pro League member Rei Sato was disqualified from Grand Prix Prague last week due to trying to play a land during combat. According to this statement the Player Investigation Committee looked into the incident. The investigation determined the “actions were opportunistic, but not premeditated nor intended to deceive his opponent.” Rei Sato will not be suspended. But he has been uninvited from the Mythic Invitational at PAX East. A replacement has not yet been announced.
Ravnica Allegiance officially releases this week. The set will be on immediate display at MagicFest New Jersey where the Grand Prix will be Limited, featuring the latest set.
