News Brief: Banned and Restricted Announcement, Eldraine in the MPL and GP Montreal

Magic crosses the streams for charity, the first week of the Eldraine Split is in the books, and there was a Banned and Restricted List announcement. This is your week in Magic news.

Banned and Restricted List Update

The October 7th Banned and Restricted List Announcement was a non-announcement. No cards were added to or removed from the lists in any format. The next Banned and Restricted List Update will be on November 18th, 2019.

My Little Ponies and Extra Life

First reported by IGN, Magic will be releasing a series of My Little Pony-themed products in order to raise money for Extra Life–a charity that fundraises for sick children. Products will be available on HasbroPulse.com between October 22 and November 5. Headlining the series is a pack of three cards–including one double-faced card–featuring Rarity, Princess Twilight Sparkle, and Nightmare Moon // Princess Luna. The three cards will sell for $50 and for each suite sold Wizards will donate $30 to Extra Life. There will also be playmats available for sale, including a double-sided playmat. The set of three will sell for $100 and with each copy sold Wizards will donate $80 to Extra Life.

There will also be streaming events where viewers can donate to receive items in MTG Arena and Magic Online. The events, taking place October 28-November 1 and again on November 2 will offer opportunities to donate and receive special card sleeve styles on Arena and both Avatars and alternate art shocklands on Magic Online.

Players Tour Qualifiers

The first round of Players Tour Qualifier dates and locations have been revealed. Feeding Players Tour 1 of 2020, the qualifying season will run from October 5 until December 22, 2019. The prize card for this round is Arcbound Ravager. While the format for Players Tour Qualifiers this round will be Standard, Magic Premier Series–tournaments run by a third party such as LATAM or StarCityGames–can utilize different formats. The schedule of Qualifiers can be found here.

Sapphire Division Eldraine Split

While Mythic Championship V is still a few weeks away, the Magic Pro League is already competing to earn a spot in Day 2 of Mythic Championship VII. This week the Sapphire Division did battle and at the end of the round robin the bracket was set. Jessica Estephan and Rei Sato would fight in the Upper Bracket while Reid Duke and Piotr Glogowski would, ahem, duke it out in the Lower Bracket.

Estephan dispatched Sato to the lower bracket where he then had to square off against Glogowski. Glogowski and his Black-Green Adventure deck took out Sato’s Bant Golos. That set up a Grand Final of Estephan’s Bant Good against Glogowski’s Golgari build. The Grand Finals were an adventure for sure, with Glogowski emerging victorious and earning a spit in Day 2 of the last Mythic Championship of 2019.

Grand Prix Montreal

MagicFest Montreal featured the first Grand Prix to use Throne of Eldraine as its Limited format. 824 players decided to tell their own story in Canada, including Magic Pro League members Reid Duke and Alexander Hayne. Hayne made the most of a hometown Grand Prix and instead of preparing for the Mythic Championship in two weeks, he instead went out and won another Grand Prix. His Black-Green Food deck featured Gilded Goose and Feasting Troll King.

Looking Forward

Next week there’s a double dose of MagicFest, with Utrecht and Bangkok both featuring Throne of Eldraine Limited Grand Prix. Then the run up to Mythic Championship V begins.
