Welcome back to another Brew Fest!
As the new set, Battle for Zendikar, is being spoiled, some crazy cards have been revealed. I’d like to point our collective brain power toward figuring out how to best use something that’s never been used before.
A collective brew fest for a brand new spoiled card has never been done before, and it seems like an awesome thing to do, so I am very excited to see what we can come up with.
The card I am so far most interested in is Bring to Light.
Bring to Light
Converge – Search your library for a creature, instant, or sorcery card with converted mana cost less than or equal to the number of colors of mana spent to cast Bring to Light, exile that card, then shuffle your library. You may cast that card without paying its mana cost.
This is a really interesting card that is basically doing something totally new. But a good place to start is by comparing it to existing cards to get a better understanding of what this might be capable of.
So basically, this is kind of like a tutor—we search for any card, and we cast it right then. The card we search for and cast can cost at most 5 mana, and as little as none, depending on what types of mana we put into it.
Here’s some early suspects we could search out and cast:
So an obvious place to start would be to try it in decks that already use these cards as a new blue/green tutor. But I’m interested in another approach.
Bring to Light First Principles Approach
In physics, the first principles approach is reasoning starting from only the physical laws. It cannot be deduced from any other proposition or assumption. In other words, it is opposite and separate from the reasoning by analogy which we just did.
So an analogy approach would put Bring to Light in an existing deck—maybe it works better, maybe it works not as well, but it certainly will teach us something new. But the first principles approach would be to build a Bring to Light deck from the ground up in a form that resembles nothing that exists so far.
This is a unique card that deserves a unique deck, and it’s our job to find it.
Bring to Light Brew Fest
I think that Modern makes for a good format to try out Bring to Light because it offers more options than Standard without the stifling budget constrictions of Legacy. Modern is the sweet spot, so I’m interested to see what new things we can do with Bring to Light there.
Bring to Light Submission Guidelines
- Modern Format
- Plays 4 Bring to Light
- Cost Sorted Low to High
- Deck Description is Brief (<250 words)
I will go through the results and write a follow-up article pulling out some of my favorites of the bunch. As we will likely get 100+ submissions and I will feature only a half-dozen, something like 5% of submissions get featured. So do it for the community and keep your expectations realistic and the emotional result will be guaranteed healthy.
Thanks to everyone who participates, as I think we can make something awesome out of this brand new card. I’m excited to see what you can come up with!
