Legacy Power Rankings – Week of 7/31/2020

My last Top10 Legacy Power Rankings was April 14th, not that many things happened since then, if we aren’t factoring Lurrus of the Dream-Den, but some new decks are now very popular and I will show them to you today.

1. Temur Delver

Dreadhorde Arcanist

Delver decks have always been the most played and successful strategies in Legacy and since Dreadhorde Arcanist is around they are now super consistent and powerful.

What I wrote about some months ago didn’t really change. Temur Delver is the best of the variants thanks to Oko, Thief of Crowns being able to disrupt opponent’s threat while being a threat of its own against the Control decks.

2. 4c Snowko

Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath

Control decks based on Arcum’s Astrolabe are still super popular and super powerful. It’s a Control deck that can play 5 different colors while being resilient to Wasteland and Blood Moon.

Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath is now mandatory in 2 or 3 copies, and that card is a beating against Delver decks. The existence of Uro made so that the deck can play a large number of Sylvan Library to be able to consistently gain the life back and never end the stream of card advantage.

3. Sneak and Show

Sneak Attack

Sneak and Show has always been in my opinion the best Combo deck in Legacy. A deck that doesn’t suffer graveyard hate and only need to resolve one spell to win: Show and Tell or Sneak Attack.

This deck has a solid MU against Control decks, and a tough MU vs Delver decks, while being outstanding against non-Blue decks.

Take the latest JPA93 list and you can’t go wrong!

4. Elves & Goblins

Allosaurus ShepherdMuxus, Goblin Grandee

Jumpstart is a format designed to teach new player how to play Magic, but while doing so it also deployed two cards that impacted Legacy big time.

I decided to put these two decks together, since they are quite similar and explosives, they both got boosted by Jumpstart and they are both equally popular and good.

The first one is Allosaurus Shepherd, who makes all your Green spell uncounterable. Resolving Natural Order or Glimpse of Nature was a big deal for Elves, and often the defeating were coming from a well placed Force of Will or Flusterstorm. This card is now great for those games and is giving Elves new life!

The second is Muxus, Goblin Grandee, which is ravaging Historic, and also very popular in Legacy, for those of who can find it on MTGO. I’ve been wanting to make a Legacy Veedeo for weeks with this deck, but Muxus is more rare than a Black Lotus in MTGO economy, hopefully in some weeks I’ll be able to.

Muxus is great in a deck with 4 Goblin Lackey and is giving Goblins explosiveness and even better late game!

How to beat those two decks, just pack up a Plague Engineer or two or some Show and Tells.

5. Esper Vial

Barrin, Tolarian Archmage

Legacy Esper Vial – JTL005 1st Legacy Challenge 26/07/2020

It’s been the month that Jtl005 dominates Challenges and Leagues with his petdeck Esper Vial, the deck is now picking more popularity and more and more players are having good success with, namely two decks in the Top4 of last week’s Legacy Challenge.

I’ve against him many times and the lines that this deck requires are so deep and difficult to figure out.

Thanks to Aether Vial you’ll be able to exploit your creatures and get incremental damage with cards like Flickerwisp and Charming Prince.

Barrin, Tolarian Archmage is a new card that will let you have tons of fan, especially if you draw your Karakas.

This is another creature based deck that’s having good success in the format, showing how secretly Aggro is Legacy becoming.

6. Lands/BG Depths

Dark Depths

Dark Depths Combo, just like Show and Tell, will always be a solid choice in Legacy.

The deck is super explosive and can put a Marit Liege into play as early as Turn1. I personally have never been a fan of Lands and preferred BG Depths over, but I can see the appeal to play The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale.

7. BUG Titan

Primeval Titan

BUG Titan is the best deck to grind in Legacy. It has an amazing Match-Up against Snowko and thanks to Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath you’re able to get there against Temur Delver too.

Of course being a Ancient Tomb + Chalice of the Void deck comes with its free win, and we always get those.

What this deck offers us over the other Stompy deck is having a great Lategame thanks to Field of the Dead, and a great consistency thanks to Once Upon a Time.

8. BR Reanimator/Hoogak

Faithless Looting

Fast graveyard decks always have their place in Legacy. I like Hoogak a bit more than BR Reanimator since it doesn’t suffer Surgical Extraction as much as BR Reanimator does, and Surgical Extraction is the main way of disruption in Legacy for graveyards.

Dredge is also a solid choice, but I’ve never been a big Dredge fan, although if you’re a Dredge guy in Modern, it’s definitely a deck you can pilot to a good record in Legacy too.

9. Eldrazi Stompy

Thought-Knot Seer

In my past Top10 Legacy Power Rankings Eldrazi Stompy was 3rd, although the rise in popularity of so many Aggro decks has definitely made Eldrazi Stompy good MUs plummet.

Eldrazi had a good time against Blue decks, especially Combo decks, definitely not against Goblins, Elves and Esper Vial.

I haven’t seen an Eldrazi deck doing well in a Legacy Challenge in a while, but it’s a deck that when getting the right set of pairings can definitely shine.

10. UB Ninja

Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow

Legacy UB Ninjas – TheHamburglar - 1st Place Legacy Challenge 25/07/2020

I just couldn’t ignore the latest success of UB Ninja, which placed three people in the two Top8 of the Legacy Challenges last weekend.

I’ve recorded a Legacy Veedeo with this deck 6 months ago and I believe I lost every single game. When I saw UB Ninja winning so much lately on MTGO I genuinely felt surprised, although I’m doing my journalist job and report the news, despite I can’t really give you an explanation on how an Ornithopter deck can compete with Legacy Power level!

That’s it for me. I’ll be back with more updates in the next Power Rankings!
