When prowess was first introduced in Khans of Tarkir, U/R Aggro had some early success. Utilizing cards like Monastery Swiftspear and Stormchaser Mage to rack up damage quickly, Treasure Cruises and burn spells could finish the job. While all the cards have changed, the strategy remains the same, and it’s fast.
Adeliz, the Cinder Wind is perfect for this strategy. Adeliz doesn’t technically have prowess, but this ability is even better, pumping all your Wizards. A 2-power haste, flying creature for 3 mana is a perfectly reasonable deal, and cashing in each of your future spells for extra damage makes this a bomb. The only downside is that Adeliz is legendary, but if you have one in play then you’re likely winning.
Soul-Scar Mage is no Monastery Swiftspear as losing haste in an aggro deck is massive, but there’s some upside here. You have lots of burn, so shrinking large creatures permanently can definitely matter. The Mage is also a Wizard, so you’re getting exactly what you want across the board.
Spellweaver Eternal is a nice beatdown creature. It’s coming in for 2 every turn, but with prowess that number can get much higher. They can chump-block, but afflict means you’re still forcing through 2 points of damage.
Ghitu Lavarunner is a new one from Dominaria that goes perfectly in this deck as another 1-drop Wizard that combos with your cheap spells. A 1/2 for 1 on turn 1 is pretty weak, but you can trigger prowess for your other creatures and use just a single mana on turn 3+ for a cheap 2/2 haste threat.
Fanatical Firebrand is the only non-Wizard in the deck, but when you’re looking to get aggressive, clear out small blockers, or just have a little extra reach in your deck, the Firebrand is a nice addition.
This deck has some serious burn in it. Getting through a couple times might be more than enough. You’re starting with the full playset of both Shock and Lightning Strike to clear the way or go upstairs. At 1 and 2 mana, these are cheap enough to play multiple spells per turn and trigger prowess repeatedly. Wizard’s Lightning’s floor is a clunky spell, but you’re talking about literal Lightning Bolt with any of your 15 Wizards on the battlefield. That’s upside I can get behind!
Riddleform is going to be a 3/3 flyer for 2 more often than not in this deck. With 23 noncreature spells, you have plenty of ammo to keep this thing attacking. The fact that Riddleform also triggers the prowess of your other creatures is a nice bonus, and being a late-game mana sink with protection from sorcery-speed removal and sweepers makes Riddleform a premier threat.
You need cheap spells and you want to make sure the gas tank is always full, so cheap cantrips play nicely in your deck. Opt is great as an instant to trigger everything and make sure that you have more spells to cast. See a land you don’t need? Send it to the bottom and get closer to more action. Warlord’s Fury isn’t exciting on the surface, but a 1-mana spell to trigger prowess and draw a card is already solid in this deck. Giving your Spellweaver Eternal or Lavarunners first strike can prove important against blockers, even if it comes at sorcery speed.
U/R Prowess was formerly the most explosive deck in Standard and it seems like the more things change, the more they stay the same. With some powerful new threats and burn spells, U/R Wizard Prowess can definitely contend in Standard!
