Who needs creatures, amirite?
There are tons of removal spells floating around in Standard. Everyone needs to interact with Duskwatch Recruiter, Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy, Archangel Avacyn, Sylvan Advocate, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet—the list goes on and on. This means that Languish, Radiant Flames, Declaration in Stone, Dromoka’s Command, Stasis Snare, Grasp of Darkness, and Ultimate Price are everywhere. So let’s start with a creatureless deck and really punish some people!
This deck has a great late game thanks to Pyromancer’s Goggles. Being able to turn your Magmatic Insights and Tormenting Voices into 1-2 mana Opportunities is incredible value, and you can do that the turn you cast Goggles to completely refill your hand. This inevitability is a huge draw to the deck.
Red has plenty of great cheap removal and burn spells that combine well with the deck’s namesake card. Fiery Impulse will help shore up the early game. Fiery Temper is still cheap enough to be relevant, kills most of the problematic creatures in Standard, and can combine nicely with Tormenting Voice to use the madness mechanic for value. Fall of the Titans saw absolutely no play before the rotation, but after being discovered for its powerful interaction with Goggles and all of the cheap spells, Fall has become a Goggles mainstay. A duplicated Fall of the Titans will end most games, dealing 7 to a pair of opposing creatures and 14 to an opponent’s face.
Having other ways to win the game besides burn is important, and luckily red has a powerful planeswalker in Chandra, Flamecaller. She can clean up a mess of creatures, or win the game by herself. Nahiri, the Harbinger hasn’t had as much fanfare yet, but I’m sure she will in time. It’s easy to overlook the value of a +2 ability in how well it protects your planeswalker. Starting at effectively 6 loyalty before getting up to 8 is a ton of damage to deal against a deck that is full of cheap removal spells. Nahiri gets the added bonus of being able to madness Fiery Temper or put Drownyard Temple in the graveyard for ramp value.
Note the 4 main-deck Hallowed Moonlight. While there are matchups where Moonlight technically doesn’t do anything, it still cycles for 2 mana. With Collected Company, Secure the Wastes, and other token makers such as Hangarback Walker, Nissa, and Gideon prevalent in Standard, Moonlight will often kill at least a Knight Ally while drawing a card for 2 mana.
After sideboard, this deck has the ability to completely transform! The sideboard is full of powerful Eldrazi so that any opponent who is looking to shave on removal is also going to get run over. Thought-Knot Seer, Reality Smasher, and Eldrazi Obligator can crush anyone who isn’t ready for them, and even those who are!
