Maybe it’s that it’s been my weapon of choice for stream sniping people playing Tron (after adding in some extra land destruction to the main deck just for fun), but there’s something sweet about utilizing snow-covered lands and this powerful Coldsnap instant.
Skred is a 1-mana instant that should trade up easily. Dealing damage equal to the number of snow permanents you control doesn’t mean much for most decks, but in Skred Red and with a mana base of all snow lands, it ends up being a Fireball for every land you have in play. It may only hit creatures, but being able to remove a giant threat for a single mana is a great tempo play for Modern.
With all of these snow lands, Scrying Sheets provides some serious value. When you have extra mana lying around, you can activate the Sheets. It can only hit other snow lands, as there are no actual snow permanents other than these lands in the deck, but it’ll clear that land from the top of your deck and put it into your hand.
Skred Red is all about disruption. Skred itself can help kill most creatures in the format, but Lightning Bolt and Blasphemous Act can team up with Volcanic Fallout and Pyroclasm to make sure nothing gets out of hand.
You also have a solid mana denial plan with Molten Rain and Blood Moon to keep your opponents from doing their powerful things. Blood Moon can lock them out of the game, while Molten Rain’s damage adds up quickly.
Koth of the Hammer is an awesome planeswalker for a midrange red deck. It can end the game quickly or ramp mana. The ultimate comes online with little effort, and can turn all of your Mountains into damage sources. This should finish off your opponent in short order, but can also just pick off their creatures if you’re under too much pressure.
Boros Reckoner is a sick blocker, but it also does a nice job of getting in there. With enough lands in play, you can target your own Reckoner with a Skred to turn that combination into a lethal Fireball on your opponent. The combo with Blasphemous Act is tried and true, as sweeping up Reckoners will result in 13 points to your opponent for each copy you had in play.
Shrine of Burning Rage comes down early, ticks up quickly, and blows up to either take down a giant monster or your opponent.
Demigod of Revenge offers a quick clock that isn’t easy to deal with. You take down the first, and the second is ready to end the game. They also play well against counters. Goblin Dark-Dwellers can bring back sweepers, burn spells, or a nice Molten Rain to wreck some havoc.
I can’t endorse an Obsidian Fireheart if you’re trying to make the most competitive version of the deck, as it’s simply underpowered for its cost. That said, it’s a fun card and helps show the power of the deck that you can still Top 8 a tournament while putting your own twist on things.
Skred Red is a very customizable deck. You don’t need nearly this many sweepers in many metagames—you can add more land destruction, better threats, different removal, or additional Blood Moons depending on the field you’re playing against. Midrange Red is a different take on the format, and Skred has enough power to win with a variety of different cards!
