Tokens are all the rage these days as the BW shell has proven to be extremely powerful. Some versions splash blue, some play the full three colors with blue, and a few stick with simply BW. Red offers some interesting options to add to any BW deck, however, that have been under-explored.
Crackling Doom is extremely powerful and its existence went a long way to push Esper Dragons out of the metagame.
Now that Esper Dragons is one of the top decks again, perhaps it’s time for Crackling Doom to make a comeback.
The real potential diamond in the rough for this strategy is Mardu Charm.
The Charm can provide some tokens to combo with Sorin, Solemn Visitor or Gideon, Ally of Zendikar or to simply block some of red’s aggressive creatures. An instant-speed Duress works well against the various Charms, Dig Through Times, and Ugins in the format. A removal spell that can handle Jace, Mantis Rider, and Anafenza, the Foremost is also a pretty nice place to be in the format. Mardu Charm does it all here.
Pia and Kiran Nalaar has been making waves in Modern and can potentially do a whole lot here in Standard as well.
We haven’t seen too much from these parents yet, but the combination with Hangarback Walker is amazing, as are 3 bodies in a Tokens shell. I like a lot of what Mardu Tokens can do in this format with its ability to both flood the board with creatures and control opposing boards.
