Deck of the Day: Historic Niv no Light

Friday morning I had ton of fun brewing with Niv-Mizzet Reborn in Historic and today I’ll show you my updated list.

Historic Niv no Light Deck List - Andrea Mengucci

Export to:
Sylvan CaryatidBring to Light

I called it Niv no Light because this deck comes from the Pioneer version of the deck, Niv to Light, which I wrote a Deep Dive about, but it doesn’t have Bring to Light in because that’s not legal in Historic.

Another card that is greatly missed is Sylvan Caryatid. While you might replace it with Paradise Druid, I believe the Druid to be too much worse than Caryatid and I’d rather fix just by hitting land drops with Growth Spiral and Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath.

The manabase is the same very good manabase you have in Pioneer, despite playing 5 colors you’re very consistent at hitting your color sources, mainly because half of your deck is lands, and because Triomes help this strategy greatly.

Jegantha, the WellspringNiv-Mizzet Reborn

In Pioneer, I like to use Yorion, Sky Nomad as my companion as I don’t believe the cost of adding 20 cards to your deck is a steep one since the power level in Pioneer you’re able to play virtually 8 copies of Niv-Mizzet Reborn thanks to Bring to Light. In Historic, with only 4 Niv-Mizzet, things get harder and I don’t love to dilute my deck as much.

Jegantha, the Wellspring isn’t a bad one either, since it’s able to fix your mana for Niv-Mizzet on its own. Although I have never struggled that much in finding missing colors in lategame. I might be unable to have Red on Turn2 to cast Angrath’s Rampage or White on three for Oath of Kaya, but in general by turn 5 or 6 you’re able to assemble your 5 colors to cast Niv.

Thought ErasureGrafdigger's Cage

Normally, I would play Thoughtseize, but I like to play Thought Erasure here, since the format is slower than Pioneer and you don’t mind to get an extra discard spell later in the game with your Niv-Mizzet Reborn.

Grafdigger’s Cage will be the way to interact with Muxus, Goblin Grandee and Collected Company. Normally I wouldn’t like to play Cage in a deck with Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath, that’s why I don’t play Cage in Sultai, although in this deck I think you’re really bad against those unfair decks and need to protect from those with a card disadvantage card like Grafdigger’s Cage.

I wish you best of luck with your Niv no Light draws, may you get all 10 cards with it!
