Deck of the Day – 5-Color Bring to Light

Bring to Light is a versatile card that has seen a fair amount of play in Modern, in both control and combo decks. While you’re always going to be paying 5 mana for your tutor effect, being able to search your library for the necessary answer at the right time is uniquely valuable. With some good mana fixing, you can make this happen in Standard.

One of the big reasons G/B Delirium is so successful is the combination of Ishkanah, Grafwidow and the ease with which you can get all of her friends early in the game. If you’re able to get delirium in this deck, which can be turned on by early sorceries, instants, and several copies of Vessel of Nascency, this could be one of the most powerful Ishkanah decks around.

Not only are there multiple Ishkanahs here, but there are 3 copies of Traverse the Ulvenwald to make it even easier to find. Traverse pulls double-duty in a deck with 5 colors, letting you fix your mana if you already have the threats in your hand. Tack on 4 copies of Bring to Light and you’re looking at up to 9 cards that can go get Ishkanah as long as you have delirium or all 5 colors. With cards like Vessel of Nascency to help dig toward Ishkanah, fuel delirium, or find additional colors, that becomes even easier to do.

Attune with Aether is a great mana fixer and energy enabler. While there isn’t a ton of use for energy in this deck, you do have Servant of the Conduit and Harnessed Lightning as good ways to spend your reserve. Lightning is a great removal spell, especially with excess energy. Servant helps to make sure you can cast your Bring to Lights for as many colors as needed and as early as possible. With 5 colors worth of cards, your Aether Hubs will be taxed early and often, so the excess energy can turn into later mana fixing as well.

The rest of the creature base looks similar to what you would find in a delirium shell. Tireless Tracker will provide some early and late-game value. Pilgrim’s Eye is an absolute all-star when you’re trying to fuel delirium and have all 5 basic land types in your deck. Emrakul is your top-end, and can still be fetched by Traverse when needed. Noxious Gearhulk is a fine answer to most threats, and Goblin Dark-Dwellers can provide value with Traverse, Harnessed Lightning, or other removal spells.

Nahiri, the Harbinger really adds another dimension. It can deal with problematic permanents, like enchantments, or help fuel your late game. Nahiri helps establish delirium with her +1, digs for key cards, and can even ultimate to go get an Emrakul, Ishkanah, or Noxious Gearhulk to turn the game around.

Radiant Flames is a nice sweeper, although there isn’t any synergy with Bring to Light. You do have access to a main-deck sweeper to tutor for in Fumigate. Packing virtually 5 Fumigates thanks to Bring to Light makes this a powerful control deck option.

With Dark-Dwellers, Ishkanah, and Fumigate, Bring to Light is a powerful and flexible card. Even though you can’t get Emrakul, Nahiri, or Radiant Flames, they’re still great cards to help you reach and take over the late-game.
