Brew With Woo – Soulflayer

I have been waiting for Soulflayer for a long, long time.

We’ve gotten some broken delve spells but none of them have been exciting as creatures. Tombstalker and Hooting Mandrills can be efficient but don’t have much brew factor.

Soulflayer is unique in that it’s really efficient and demands a lot of thought. What are the most important abilities? What are the best creatures to grant those abilities? How do we combine this into a cohesive and consistent deck? This will require a lot of work but I’m up for the challenge in Modern!

Super Combo

If we want to super combo our Soulflayer, the most exciting card to me is Drogskol Reaver. Double strike and lifelink on a 4/4 flyer is enough to beat any kind of fair creature deck.

Other nice abilities come with Akroma, Angel of Wrath, Sphinx of the Steel Wind, Chromanticore, but crucially none of them grant double strike.

Souflayer is good against Lightning Bolt and Abrupt Decay already, but protection from other removal would be nice as well.

In Modern these are the two best hexproof creatures that already see play.

Haste is great for speeding up the clock against any deck, but especially against combo decks. Beyond Akroma the most exciting options to me are Vengevine and Falkenrath Aristocrat, although there are many more options.

Double Strike

Double Strike is for sure the craziest ability as it effectively doubles the size of our threat. Drogskul Reaver is a good one, but for cheaper options Viashino Slaughtermaster could be good.

Flying is a great combat ability that is extremely common. The best option to start with is Birds of Paradise, and I would also be excited to play with Stinkweed Imp.

Modern Soulflayer

Today I’ve got two potential options in Modern. One is a control deck with a similar feel to the Complex Dredge deck we enjoyed last year. The other is a Dredgevine-style aggro deck. Both good options depending on play style.

1 – Soulflayer Control with Unburial Rites

Raven’s Crime / Life From the Loam can decimate any slow start and win any long game and happen to work well as enablers for Soulflayer. Our backup plans are to grind as a control deck with Stinkweed Imp and Liliana of the Veil and to finish off with Unburial Rites on a massive fatty.

2 – Soulflayer Aggro with Vengevine

Everyone loves a nice fast Dredgevine list and I’m no different. This one is exciting as it has some crazy fast starts with lots of hard-hitting haste creatures. We have a consistent early-game rush and Soulflayer can come out as a hasty double strike flyer without having to run any cards that just rot in our hand.

Soulflayer Sideboard

For the sideboard, I would like to take advantage of situational flashback cards like Ancient Grudge, Lingering Souls, and Ray of Revelation to improve our matchup against their primary plan.

I would also like to have better answers against common hate cards like Scavenging Ooze and Rest in Peace. I think Abrupt Decay would be our best option.

Soulflayer Best Use

What do you think is the best use for Soulflayer? Play blue for Geist of Saint Traft? Play a grindy control game with Unburial Rites? Blitz out with Vengevine? Lots of good options and it depends on play style!

As we wait for Fate Reforged to come on Magic Online all we can do is brew, so let’s get to it! Let me know what you think!
