Deck of the Day – Black Eldrazi

The Eldrazi cards are awesome. They are tons of fun to play with and super flavorful. Many people are down on them because Eye of Ugin and Eldrazi Temple completely dominate Modern, but the actual Eldrazi are excellent. They also happen to be the cards that will stick around in Standard the longest, so you’d best get used to them!

Thought-Knot Seer, Reality Smasher, and Matter Reshaper are the backbone of the creature suite. Presenting disruption, consistent card advantage, and bodies large enough to already warrant their cost with much weaker abilities, these cards have dominated Modern. They’re making a real impact on Standard as well. They key is to find your favorite shell to utilize them.

Hedron Crawler seems innocuous, but as a mana ramp spell that also helps “color fix” for Reality Smashers, the Crawler is pretty great. These cards can fit in any shell of the deck, and I’ve seen mono-blue and blue/red versions both doing well.

But what if you decide to add black? Bearer of Silence is a great start. A 2-power flyer is perfectly costed at 2 mana and it scales into card advantage later. Wasteland Strangler is similar. A 3/2 creature for 3 is okay, and sometimes, you take down a creature and get that big card advantage, and that’s when Eldrazi decks take over.

If you want exile effects, Transgress the Mind and Warping Wail are a great place to start. With so few aggro decks in the format, Transgress has been showing up in great numbers across Standard decks. Warping Wail hasn’t seen much play, but being able to kill mana creatures, create Scions, or counter something like Painful Truths is pretty reasonable.

This main deck is going to remain legal even after the rotation. Decks focused on Eldrazi, especially those that don’t require fetchlands or Ghostfire Blade for success, seem well poised to continue to win for months to come!
