Urza, Lord High Artificer used to be a format staple in Modern when it came out, together with Arcum’s Astrolabe and Mox Opal. However, once they got banned, it slowly faded away. Today, we’re seeing it again after a top four performance in a MTGO Modern Challenge by Marin_Arrias with UW Urza.

Urza, Lord High ArtificerThopter FoundryUrza's Saga

We have a Yorion, Sky Nomad deck that manages to fit plenty of toolboxes, from Urza’s Saga to Whir of Invention to Stoneforge Mystic, as well as four Chalice of the Void in the main deck!

Stoneforge Mystic isn’t finding the usual Batterskull and Sword of Fire and Ice here. Instead, we have Sword of the Meek, which combos with Thopter Foundry to make 1/1 Thopters for one mana each and can go infinite together with Urza, Lord High Artificer for infinite mana, infinite life, infinite Thopters and playing the whole deck with Urza’s ability. Stoneforge Mystic can also find Kaldra Compleat and Shadowspear, which are additional ways to win the game together with Urza’s Saga or Urza’s Construct tokens.

Whir of Invention is the final toolbox that can find either pieces of the combo, ramp on turn three thanks to Razortide Bridge or find interaction thanks to Portable Hole and Soul-Guide Lantern.

There’s a bit of control here too thanks to Counterspell, Chalice of the Void, Prismatic Ending and Solitude, making you act like a control deck that can also grind with artifact value thanks Urza and his Saga.
