Try Out Hall of Famer Kenji Tsumura’s Standard BW Angels!

Standard Orzhov Angels by Kenji Tsumura

I was looking through the latest MTGO deck dump when I noticed this BW Angels deck that went 5-0 in a league. Normally I wouldn’t think too much of a relatively ordinary looking Orzhov Angels deck, but the pilot is Hall of Famer Kenji Tsumura

Inspiring OverseerLiesa, Forgotten ArchangelRampage of the Valkyries

When I tried this deck, I felt that Inspiring Overseer was a bit too slow for Constructed Magic, but Kenji is running the full four copies. There is also a third copy of Liesa, Forgotten Archangel, which is admittedly one of the best cards in the deck, especially because it can’t be killed by Vanishing Verse, one of the most popular removal spells in Standard. It also doesn’t die to a sideboarded Ray of Enfeeblement

Another interesting card in Kenji’s deck is Rampage of the Valkyries, which honestly seems like it could be really good in midrange matchups.

Lastly, I wanted to highlight the 2-2 Legion Angel split. When I tried this deck myself, I played 1-3, which I now believe is wrong because this deck really wants a four-drop Angel. Why play only one when it’s so good to draw it? Moving the second one into the main deck makes a lot of sense to me.

I’m not sure if this deck is fast enough to race Runes, but it seems decent against the rest of the field.
