Top 10 Most Iconic MTG Cards in Dominaria Remastered

Dominaria Remastered preview season was a whirlwind experience, but the full spoiler is in fact now available. I was personally curious what sorts of cards we were going to see in Dominaria Remastered, since the Dominaria plane is pretty expansive. I’m going to rank my personal top 10 most iconic cards in Dominaria Remastered, knowing that many readers have a different top 10 of their own! The fact is that this list is probably the toughest one I’ve ever had to make because this set has an abundance of iconic cards, with some of the most beloved ones ever printed in one set. Keep in mind the list is based off my version of what iconic mean, not best or most powerful.

10. Siege-Gang Commander

If you ask me what the most iconic Goblin of all time is, it’s Siege-Gang Commander. Certainly, this is a card I have cast more in Limited, as it’s an absolute bomb there, but it has certainly seen good use in Constructed as well. Siege-Gang Commander was featured in Wolfgang Eder’s 2003 World Championship deck among others.

9. Serra Angel

Serra Angel is a card that speaks for itself. The choice to put Serra Angel on this list isn’t about what decks it’s in or how good the card is. For me, when I think classic white creatures, Serra Angel comes to mind. Having been around since Alpha, this card has been reprinted several times, and I’m excited every time I get to play with it again.

8. Sylvan Library

Sylvan Library is strong enough to see Legacy usage, as I’ve cast it plenty of times there. The potential to draw three cards in green is quite a unique effect.

7. Shivan Dragon

There simply isn’t a Dragon that compares to Shivan Dragon. I don’t think there will ever be a Dragon as well-known as this one. Again, going back to Alpha, this was once considered one of the best cards in the game. Now, Dragons are perceived a bit differently, but the tribe remains very popular, and I don’t doubt we will see plenty more Dragons in the future.

6. Swords to Plowshares

Exiling a creature for one white mana always has always felt incredibly powerful to me. This card has been a steady fixture where its legal. Many players, like myself may have cast it in Cube a plethora of times.

5. Vampiric Tutor

Being able to search your library for any card period is a unique effect, especially at one mana. While this isn’t the only tutor within the cycle in Dominaria Remastered, it is the one that I see as the most iconic. Vampiric Tutor has been enabling combo strategies for quite a while.

4. Force of Will

For anyone that plays Vintage or Legacy, Force of Will is an incredibly powerful card. A zero-mana counter still seems silly powerful every time I stop and think about it.

3. Birds of Paradise

Perhaps the most adored “mana dork” of all time, Birds of Paradise is a favorite of many players. Being able to make a mana of any color creates so much flexibility in terms of decks that this can be put in.

2. Wrath of God

Wrath of God it is easily the most famed sweeper effect ever printed. I certainly say “they might have the Wrath” even when talking about a totally different white sweeper. While power levels have changed throughout the years, I’m a fan of destroy all creature effects largely costing four or more mana to cast. While the “it can’t be regenerated” clause doesn’t come up that much, it feels really good when it does and you’re the one casting the Wrath of God.

1. Counterspell

Sometimes the most iconic card is the simplest one. This card paved the way for a long line of counterspells, and still remains incredibly powerful. Blue control and Counterspell are like peanut butter and jelly!

Alright, here are a few cards that almost made the list: Tormod’s Crypt, Dark Depths, Deep Analysis, Mind Stone, Man-o’-War, Maze of Ith, Momentary Blink, Savannah Lion, Flametongue Kavu, Fact or Fiction, Fireblast, Grim Lavamancer, Royal Assassin, Sneak Attack, Entomb, Urza, Lord High Artificer, Duress, Fire // Ice… to name a few!
