Strixhaven Preview Highlight: Torrent Sculptor

Strixhaven previews are in full swing, and one of the double-faced cards really caught my eye. Let’s see what Torrent Sculptor has to offer, besides two cards for the price of one:

First of all, you get Torrent Sculptor itself. It’s often going to be a 3/3 or 4/4 for four, and sometimes even a 5/5 if you’re going deep on spells. It also has ward 2, a new keyword that’s essentially Frost Titan’s text, which makes them pay an additional two mana if they want to mess with it.

Ward is actually different in a meaningful way than cards we’ve seen recently, like Kasmina, Enigmatic Mentor or Reidane, God of the Worthy. It lets them cast their spell or activate their ability, then asks for the additional two mana to be paid. If they don’t have it, too bad, and their thing is countered. That’s pretty savage, and I expect some befuddled pauses on Arena when ward comes out.

Anyways, back to Torrent Sculptor. If all you got was the option for this mini-Frost Titan, I wouldn’t be singing its praises, but there’s much more to come. The wonderfully-named Flamethrower Sonata is a big deal too (I really do like the name).

For two mana, you get a bit of card filtering and an efficient removal spell. Yes, you do need to discard a specific card type, but a deck built around this card should be able to swing that without too much issue. If you can reliably discard a spell and turn this into removal, you end up with quite a card, all told.

Let’s recap – you get a removal spell (that lets you churn through your deck and put expensive spells into your graveyard) and you get a hard-to-kill midrange threat, all in one card. Granted, you don’t get both at once, but having the option of either is quite strong. I’d guess that you cast Sonata about 70 percent of the time, but both cards are good, and the combination is sweet.

Here’s an initial take on the kind of deck this could easily find a home in:

Sea Gate Restoration // Sea Gate, RebornPrismari Command

Sea Gate Restoration is awesome with Torrent Sculptor. It works nicely with halves, counting as an expensive spell in hand or graveyard, and you can cast it for good effect with Uvilda when needed.

Prismari Command is sweet too, as it can give you Treasure out of nowhere, as well as interacting with the opponent in a variety of ways.

I’m excited to try out Torrent Sculptor, and don’t need any excuse to jam my decks full of expensive spells (which it justifies nicely).
