Strixhaven Preview Highlight: Modern Humans with Silverquill Silencer

Silverquill Silencer looks like a great addition to my pet deck in Modern: Humans.

Silverquill Silencer
Creature – Human Cleric
As Silverquill Silencer enters the battlefield, choose a nonland card name.

Whenever an opponent casts a spell with the chosen name, that player loses 3 life and you draw a card.

Meddling MageReflector Mage

You’re already trying to disrupt your opponent with cheap Human creatures such as Meddling Mage, Kitesail Freebooter and Reflector Mage, which try to accomplish the same goal as Silverquill Silencer.

Thanks to Kitesail Freebooter and Reflector Mage, you’ll be aware of what to name with Silverquill Silencer. Just like with Meddling Mage, being able to see what your opponent’s next plays are going to be gains you a severe advantage on both cards and life total. It’s also attached to a nice 3/2 body, which will be relevant in your aggro deck.

Here’s where I’m at in Modern with the Silencer currently.

4 Cavern of Souls
4 Champion of the Parish
3 Phantasmal Image
4 Noble Hierarch
4 Meddling Mage
4 Mantis Rider
4 Kitesail Freebooter
1 Island
4 Horizon Canopy
4 Ancient Ziggurat
4 Reflector Mage
2 Silent Clearing
4 Thalia's Lieutenant
4 Aether Vial
4 Unclaimed Territory
3 Silverquill Silencer

Sideboard
4 Auriok Champion
3 Damping Sphere
2 Dismember
4 Skyclave Apparition
2 Elite Spellbinder

This card isn’t only Modern material though. I can see it breaching into Historic thanks to Kitesail Freebooter and Elite Spellbinder being able to reveal your opponent’s hand so you can name the right card. The lack of good one-drops will make Humans have a harder time functioning in Historic, but it’s certainly something that I’ll try to explore.
