Standard Mono-Black Control by Greg Kowalski
When scrolling through some Magic content on Twitter today, I noticed this Mono-Black Control deck posted by Greg Kowalski. Greg mentioned that he too was sick of running into Esika’s Chariot and Wrenn and Seven decks all day long and wanted something that beat it, going undefeated against it during his last two streams.
Now, I’m not going to lie, I have absolutely no idea how this deck plays out because there is just way too much going on to really get all the play patterns without playing any games. You’re producing a lot of value thanks to the learn mechanic and all the planeswalkers and I can imagine all the sweepers are amazing against the green decks. There are some tips and tricks you can use with this deck in his Twitter post.
Greg is known for his diligence in testing, so when he says one deck has a good matchup against another, we always trust him. As a funny note aside, this was highlighted in our team forum after one of the European Legacy GPs where Greg lost in the finals with his Grixis Delver deck. Paulo asked him in our team chat something about certain matchups with the deck, to which Greg replied “I only played 100 matches with this deck, so I am not sure I am qualified to give you accurate answers.”
I will probably try this deck in a video at some point because it looks so much different than all the decks most people are currently playing. One of the best things about brews is that your opponents usually have no clue what’s going on and they don’t have a clear plan and a sideboard guide ready against you. This certainly looks like one of those decks!
