Standard Mardu Sacrifice
Today’s deck is Mardu Sacrifice, which took fifth place in last weekend’s Hooglandia Open. This deck is somewhat similar to some of the Rakdos decks we saw in Standard 2022, but a bit lower to the ground and includes white for Extus, Oriq Overlord as well as Showdown of the Skalds, a card that was underrepresented in Standard 2022 for how good it is.
This deck has a lot of cheap creatures, and creatures that produce value when they die. Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia provides a 2/2 Zombie with decayed that actually provides a lot of value to adding counters to Lolth, Spider Queen, but even more importantly for providing fodder with which to cast Awaken the Blood Avatar.
The deck has a lot of card advantage, between learn, Showdown of the Skalds, Extus, Orcus, Prince of Undeath and Lolth. Pure card advantage can be an area where these kinds of decks can be lacking, which can be relatively punishing sometimes due to the fact that many of the cards tend to be cheap and a little underpowered, with a myriad of 1/1s for one and the like.
I really like the look of this deck. The card choices seem to make a lot of sense and there seems to be a strong and proactive game plan. When I get around to trying sacrifice decks, this is where I’ll start.
