I’m at the point in Standard where I’ve played so many matches with Rogues, Mono-Red, Sultai and Adventure decks that I’m just looking for something new and different. When looking at some recent results, I was pleased to be reminded that control decks like this Standard Dimir Control list still exist and can do well in this format.
If you’re a fan of control, you’ll like this deck. Your goal is to draw extra cards and make land drops with the help of Mazemind Tome and Omen of the Sea, counter important cards from the opponent with various permission spells and get rid of their creatures with Bloodchief’s Thirst, Heartless Act, Extinction Event and Shadows’ Verdict.
Lochmere Serpent and Shark Typhoon are your finishers, both of which you can play at the end of your opponent’s turn whenever there’s good timing instead of having to tap out on your own turn.
Yorion, Sky Nomad provides free value from a companion, something that’s almost a necessity for the control decks these days.
Ashiok, Nightmare Muse and Kaervek, the Spiteful add a little spice. Kaervek especially seems like it could be pretty good right now against decks like Naya, Rogues, Mono-Red and Elite Spellbinder.
I’m not going to tell you that this deck is a better choice than Rogues, Sultai or the Adventure decks if you’re submitting a deck for a big tournament, but if you like playing control or just want to have fun on the arena ladder, Standard Dimir Control is a solid option.
