Modern Whir of Invention Combo – Deck Highlight

Modern Whir Combo by Immanuel Gerschenson

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Whir of Invention deck perform well in Modern. However, Immanuel Gerschenson, an ex-Gold Pro from Austria, revived the deck once more, winning Sunday’s Modern Challenge with Modern Whir Combo.

The deck uses Whir of Invention as tutor for hate pieces like Ensnaring Bridge or Nihil Spellbomb, as well as Sword of the Meek and Thopter Foundry to combo out. This combo, once upon a time banned in Modern, now is able to create an infinite life and infinite tokens combo thanks to Urza, Lord High Artificer.

There’s also another tutor in the deck in the form of Goblin Engineer, which is good enough for a red splash all on its own. With the Engineer, you can put your Sword of the Meek in your graveyard to help combo out or you can use it as a toolbox thanks to its second ability.

Portable Hole is the newest tool the deck got, able to kill a one-drop on turn one and then add a mana thanks to both Whir of Invention or Urza, Lord High Artificer since it’s an artifact. Remember though that you won’t be able to tutor it up with Urza’s Saga since the Saga can only get you artifacts with a zero or one colorless mana value artifact, but that won’t be a problem since you have so many in this deck that you won’t end up short!

Urza’s Saga got a lot of “ban talk” when Modern Horizons 2 was released, and although it’s now slowly fading out of the scene, it’s nice to see it come back winning the event!
