Modern Jeskai MoonBlade – Deck Highlight

Modern Jeskai MoonBlade by Talisker

Prison decks based around Chalice of the Void and Blood Moon have been very successful in Legacy, where you have access to fast mana like Ancient Tomb, Chrome Mox and Simian Spirit Guide. They aren’t very common in Modern, where those cards aren’t legal, because it might already be too late for these prison elements to be effective. Despite all of that, Talisker won Saturday Modern Challenge on MTGO with his own brew, Jeskai MoonBlade, that features both these prison elements and takes the game over thanks to snowballing creatures like Stoneforge Mystic and Fury.

Because of Blood Moon and its ability to slow down the game, drawing your Equipment isn’t as bad as whenever you play other Stoneforge decks. I’ve always disliked Stoneforge Mystic in Modern, where the lack of Brainstorm made Batterskull and Kaldra Compleat truly terrible draws, but with this deck, you can either get rid of them for profit with Seasoned Pyromancer or cast them in a long, stalled out game.

Playing Chalice of the Void means that you have to get creative with your removal spells. This is why we see Bonecrusher Giant and Lightning Helix over the more common Lightning Bolt and Unholy Heat.

The deck is even splashing blue for Teferi, Time Raveler, a card that will give you an edge in the Cascade matchup (if Chalice of the Void isn’t enough) as well as being a great card overall.

The sideboard also features few blue cards such as Flusterstorm, which dodges your own Chalice of the Void, Geist of Saint Traft, which is a great threat against UW Control, and finally Dennick, Pious Apprentice, which is a solid turn two play against Burn that gives a hard time to Archon of Cruelty reanimator strategies.
