Michael Bonde’s Wild Ride with Explorer Rakdos Sacrifice

Explorer Rakdos Sacrifice by Michael Bonde

Michael Bonde had a pretty wild ride this weekend in the Arena Championship Qualifier. Having grinded all the way from a play-in event into the final boss round on Day 2, he unfortunately didn’t manage to get an opponent in almost three hours of waiting time. The structure didn’t seem to work out too well for the amount of players that played both days, so hopefully this is going to get addressed in the future.

That said, this puts Michael’s record to an amazing 17-2 total, which definitely deserves a shout out.

Kroxa, Titan of Death's HungerOb Nixilis, the Adversary

The deck of choice was Rakdos Sacrifice, cutting the green cards for a lower curve and a faster and more consistent mana base. These changes should make this deck better against control, which showed up in big numbers. Normally they try to slow you down until they drop a game winning Farewell, but Kroxa, Titan of Death’s Hunger and Ob Nixilis, the Adversary are much better threats than Korvold, Fae-Cursed King in this matchup.

Whether you prefer straight Rakdos or Jund, sacrifice decks are definitely good right now. Explorer continues being a fun format that is still fairly unexplored, so it rewards brewing and a lot of practice, which is always a good recipe for a successful format.
