Is Elder Gargaroth the Next Big Thing in Explorer?

Explorer Gruul Aggro by Martin Juza

I’ve seen Elder Gargaroth being talked about a lot in Explorer and it makes sense. If Rakdos Midrange is the most popular deck, then having an extremely powerful creature that doesn’t get killed by Fatal Push can easily win you the whole matchup.

One option is to add it to Mono-Green, but that’s going to make Collected Company a lot worse. So why not try Gruul, which also gets to run some of the best Explorer cards in Bonecrusher Giant, Fable of the Mirror-Breaker, Chandra, Torch of Defiance and Glorybringer?

This is just a rough sketch of what I would start on. The key is having enough mana accelerants to play Glorybringer and Elder Gargaroth ahead of the curve and also enough value cards to make sure we can keep up with Rakdos.

This deck most likely won’t be very good against Azorius Control, but most versions have been running less than four sweepers lately, so you definitely have a chance. After sideboard, I would fix the matchup with planeswalkers, which are always hard to deal for them.

You should be very good against other creature decks thanks to Bonecrusher Giant, Glorybringer and Elder Gargaroth. Greasefang currently doesn’t seem super popular, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
