How Do You Beat Izzet and Jeskai in Standard? Play Mono-Green!

Standard Mono-Green Aggro by bless_von

None other than Logan “Jaberwocki” Nettles won both the Standard Challenges with Jeskai Hinata last weekend. Both Top 8s were filled with blue-red decks, and we saw Logan having to battle Temur Midrange and Jeskai Dragonstorm to claim victory. Esper Midrange looks to be overcome and pushed to the wayside.

Jwari Disruption // Jwari RuinsVoltage Surge

There are a number of reasons why Izzet has performed well recently. We all know about the power of Goldspan Dragon, Fable of the Mirror-Breaker and Expressive Iteration, but two cards that deserve more spotlight are Jwari Disruption and Voltage Surge. Both are cheap and good on the draw at catching you back up. The play pattern of turn two Jwari Disruption countering the opponent’s Fable or Raffine, Scheming Seer, untap and play your own Fable is a crucial swing that can turn the disadvantage of being on the draw into an advantage. Standard consists mostly of two and four-toughness creatures, where Voltage Surge comes in handy compared to a card like Strangle

If you ask me, I believe Jeskai Hinata to be the best deck in the format right now. Temur and Dragonstorm are closely behind. How long do I think will this dominance continue?

Perhaps not too long after all. MTGO user bless_von reached fifth place with Mono-Green Aggro in one of the two Standard Challenges. Big green monsters are historically quite good against Izzet decks.

Mono-Green Aggro used to be one of the best decks in the format not too long ago. With The Wandering Emperor seeing less and less play, it might be time to sleeve up Old-Growth Troll again.

Limited all-star Jewel Thief is making an appearance. It has the crucial three toughness to be good against Voltage Surge and the Goblin token coming out of Fable of the Mirror-Breaker

Bless_von choosing to go with a cheesy splash for Archon of Emeria supported by 10 sources if you include Jewel Thief. Naya Runes is great against Mono-Green Aggro and the splash for Archon is trying to turn that matchup around.

All in all, if you believe Standard is solved yet, I strongly doubt that. I’m excited about the metagame developments to come.
