In the last few weeks, there’s been a resurgence of Grixis decks in Modern. We’ve seen Strongsoul dominating Challenge after Challenge with Grixis Death’s Shadow and we’ve seen the Shadowless version of the deck perform well. Today, we’re going to explore a Grixis Control shell from TspJendrek who’s been championing the return of an old fan’s favorite: Snapcaster Mage.

This approach definitely qualifies as control deck, since you’re only playing Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer and Snapcaster Mage as win conditions, leaving Death’s Shadow, Dragon’s Rage Channeler and Kroxa, Titan of Death’s Hunger at home.

This deck also uses cantrip such as Consider and Cling to Dust to hit the land drops making sure Snapcaster Mage is as effective as possible. Up to three copies of Kolaghan’s Command top off the curve, which guarantees card advantage and more interaction against artifact strategies such as Hammertime.

The lack of Kroxa is definitely something to note, and the escape card of choice is instead Cling to Dust to gain some very precious life against Burn and have more game against the myriad of graveyard strategies floating around in Modern.

If you’re a control type of player and don’t like Teferi very much, this is definitely the deck for you!
