Hi everyone. Omnath is still running roughshot over Standard, and most people are trying to play decks that beat it, or just playing the deck itself. Here’s a deck when I saw yesterday on twitter, from Jacob Wilson, that looked to have a decent chance against Omnath to me. Here is Boros Winota;
Standard Boros Winota Deck List - Jacob Wilson
This deck aim’s to play cheap, hopefully non-human creatures like Stonecoil Serpent, Selfless Savior, Archon of Emeria, Bonecrusher Giant, or Skyclave Apparition on the first three turns, and then play Winota, Joiner of Forces on the fourth turn. After Winota is played, all the non-humans can attack and hopefully put copies of Basri’s Lieutenant or Kenrith, the Returned King into play. Selfless Savior can protect Winota and allow the attack even against instant removal spell.
This is an aggressive deck, but the most powerful draws here are even more powerful than a normal aggressive deck. Winota is extremely explosive and even in game where we don’t draw Winota, we can still win with a well timed Embercleave. There are also a lot of modal double faced cards, allowing the deck to mitigate flooding and have some extra spells, particularly to remove creatures.
I would try this deck because one way I like to determine whether or not to give a deck a chance is picturing games where a deck and the deck to beat both get top end draws. I think, intuitively, this deck actually has a chance to beat some of Omnath’s best draws by doing some explosive things with Winota.
