Andrew Cuneo is one of the best control deck builders and players in the entire world and this weekend, he proved it again by making the Top 8 of Kaldheim Championship with his version of Historic U/B Control.
This deck picked up quite a few new tools from Kaldheim in the form of the foretell cards. Saw It Coming is mainly used in decks with Teferi, Hero of Dominaria these days because of how well it works on turn five with his +1 ability untapping two lands. However, it’s still great here as well.
Behold the Multiverse replaces Glimmer of Genius or Chemister’s Insight, mostly because you want to keep your opponent guessing when you foretell.
Finally, Shadows’ Verdict is a great new mass removal spell that’s great mainly against the Jund decks, where exiling cards like Dreadhorde Butcher, Midnight Reaper and Scrapheap Scrounger means they don’t get their dying trigger or can come back from the graveyard.
This deck is a classic control deck with some removal, sweepers, counters and very few finishers in the form of Torrential Gearhulk, which can get you some nice extra value thanks to Sublime Epiphany.
I like the added value of the Narset, Parter of Veils and Commit // Memory combo, which can be pretty deadly in the right matchup. This, combined with Gearhulk, is also the reason why Andrew chose not to put Grafdigger’s Cage into his deck.
This kind of deck needs to be very well tuned for the expected metagame and needs an expert pilot, but if you can master it, it can be very rewarding.
