Can Faithful Mending Make Modern Reanimator Top Tier?

Ever since the banning of Faithless Looting, Modern deckbuilders have been hungry for a good spell-based looting effect. Options have been scarce, but Innistrad: Midnight Hunt contains a very exciting new fixed Faithless Looting – Faithful Mending.

While this costs two mana compared to Looting (which is a big increase), it’s instant speed and provides incidental life gain. I expect players to be surprised how good the incidental life gain is as they play and flashback four to six Mendings over the course of a game. While this card has a chance to help out Arclight Phoenix and Dredge decks, I expect the most obvious home for this card to be in reanimator strategies.

I’ve built a lot of reanimator decks in Modern post-Modern Horizons 2, and while I like the archetype, it’s felt like it’s one good enabler away from being a top deck in Modern. I think Mending is the enabler reanimator players have been looking for.

Here’s my first draft of Esper Reanimator with Faithful Mending. There’s a lot of ways to build the deck and I expect to try a lot of new things, but I think this is a good starting point.
